Sea cliff skank.

Slime grease condensation seepage ooze sea mist bollox.

I seem to have been facing an undue amount of this this summer, even when the weather has been good for a while (i.e. late summer).

Main culprits have been:

Great Zawn even after several days of great sunny weather.

Raven Wall area of Bosigran - all that bloody black and red vein stuff, completely gopping again during a dry period.

Fallen Block Zawn at Rhosy - in the evening after a really nice day, still slimey in some areas.

Berry Head, after mostly dry weather with a reasonable easterly breeze on it, needed a KG of chalk to stay attached.

So....

What's the beta??

I understand, for example, Pantontino's guidelines - drying breeze being essential. I'd have thought either breeze or sun or both or lots of dry weather would help but it doesn't seem to in the above cases. The one thing I have found is this is all in areas with a relatively smooth rock texture, on bits of rock without much "grain" or "grit". That bastard compact black/red granite in particular. As a contrast, as soon as the sea leaves Sharpnose, it's felt pretty climbable, pretty quick. Maybe the smooth stuff allows a bit of dampness to sit on the surface??

Obviously this is bollox stuff to climb on so ideas on how to avoid it are all welcome...

St Bees is the worst,,, can be bone dry on dank foggy days, seeping wildly on sunny hot days, never seen it frozen but the salt coats alot of the boulders like a frost early on in the day, then burns off around 3pm, from my experience...

The golden rule round our way, is don't bother going to a sea cliff until after mid day (one of the many reasons why I like sea cliff climbing). Your visit to Rhoscolyn was in the evening though - maybe it had been really greasy in the morning and you actually got it in 'better' condition than earlier in the day? Was it windy?

Tis a fickle thing for sure.

Yah. My previous visit to Fallen Block Zawn was before mid-day and it was unclimbably vile. This was okay but still greasy in the cracks. Quite possibly it had got a lot better.

It's really blighted the Aberdeen seacliffs this year. I think some crags have been greasy all summer. Grand Diedre at Craig Stirling felt like a chipshop wrapper when I did it. Weak morning sun nver seems to have much effect on drying out.
