Partial download recovery windows XP

Complete Windows punter. After spending a considerable amount of time downloading Keith's Magic production, it got to 98% before the router decided to play tits thus cancelling my download.

Are partial downloads saved anywhere or is it as simple as start the process again?

if your not using a download manager then sorry but your likely to out of luck in terms of continuing a download. There will probably be a big temp file somewhere but from my experience if it is video it is likely to be corrupted. You can try changing the extension from .tmp to whatever the format is eg. .mov/.mpg/.avi/.wmv but with video this is a bit of a long shot as most video files need to be 'complete' to play at all.

If your router does this regularly think about using a download manager http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm#33 here's a few free ones. The let you continue a download if it gets interrupted.

Think you've just got to try it - i have had some downloads just resume automatically.

Worth getting a good download manager anyway, if your router is unreliable.

I actually now have 3 copies of this video on separate computers. Sadly none of them are from within this century and are hence refusing to play what looks like a serene production. I have the latest version of VLC on my ibook G4 which is pumping out a whopping 256meg of ram with a 1.33ghz processor. Clogged up with years worth of shit, it's refusing to play ball.

I should mention: I can skip through the video but the frames freeze. It's all too obvious where I'm going wrong  ::)
