went to the mangla last night - didn't realise until we got there that they've totally done the place out, its now got a reet blinging swish type modern decor, all the crockery matches, and the prices have gone up slightly. Not sure what i make of it. I think part of the charm of the place was the fact that it was proper shabby. anyone else been of late?

yeah, went last weekend without realising it had been done up.  Wasn't that impressed, used to be awesome, felt it was just average now...

Whats the deal with drinks at mangla? Is it bring your own alcoholic drinks or bring anything?

dunno, everyone gets ales in from the easthouse (which incidentally also looks like its been done out), would probably be a bit tight to bring your own soft drinks, since they do sell em.

I thought the food at the Mangla was totally the same as before the re-decoration when I went last time. Didn't notice any increase in price (what things have gone up?), got one of the usuals and it came to the standard £6 as ever. The only annoyance was that the fancy new bowls meant the portions was smaller.
If you fancy a change try Jumeirah, the new place at the bottom of London road. Mangla (Kashmiri) style curries, some interesting stuff on the menu like Fish Karahi, Karahi Methi and one with bitter gourd. You have to specify mild/medium/hot, I would strongly advise asking for hot if you are used to the Mangla. I asked for medium and it was very mild. Pleasant decor and not too pricey.

I am pleased to inform the UKB massive that the place to be for Indian in Sheffield is now Ashoka on Eccleshall road. I went a few years ago and it was pretty good. This summer, my brother and I went there by random chance, and it was excellent - very tasty and characterful dishes. He went back a couple more times, and I've had a takeaway since, and it is consistently good. The only slight downside is it is more expensive than average - expect to pay 120-140% over a normal takeaway (but worth it IMO).

The ashoka is good but just too expensive, the mangala is awesome but doesnt serve peshwari naan!! Tut tut! I think the Kashmir just down from the mangala is excellent and very cheap, also 7 spices at west bar is very good.

If people are ever in leeds and want a good curry go to Nazams, if coming from town to Headinley turn right at Hyde Park pub and about 400m down it is on your right. Very good curry, very cheap and 1 naan feeds 2!

 :great:

The Mangla will always be the best curry house in Sheff in my eyes - have been back since it's been done out and while it lacks the charm that it used to have it is still good. Think the prices have gone up slightly but it is still cheaper than a Ashoka and the food is just so much better as somebody pointed out the only thing they fail to do is Peshwari Naans which is just wrong though a Garlic and Chilli Naan is a good substitute.

monkeyboy - you get what you pay for.

bb - Mangla's food is better than Ashoka? Really! I will have to try the former again then. P.S. How is the leg doing?

Good knowledge, I had an excellent meal here (and then spent the next few days doing massively loud farts- surely the best thing about curries?)

Legs not bad mate but the excellent grit weather we have been having for the last week makes it harder to accept being injured - suspect that I just twisted my knee but it felt really horrible when I did it. Hope to be back doing something before Christmas (something being on a very tight top rope down the wall but that's the initial aim) I missed last winter through injury and it is not going to be a repeat performance this time around...

Anyway stop asking about my knee - go to the Mangla and have a proper curry!  ;D

I'm with bluebrad, i've been to most of the curry places in Sheff and the Mangla is head and shoulders above the rest IMO. The curries are Leeds/Bradford style proper curries rather than the dumbed down version you get in the vast majority of curry places. I'm not saying the food at the other places isn't pleasant to eat, it's just it's not the sort of proper curry I got used to when living in Bradford for a year. Jumeirah is the same style and very good too.

Both quality though, if people have time when they are next in Leeds def get to Nazams and see what you think. :great:

word, i seem to remember a lot of the basic main courses in the mangla used to be under £4, wheras now they are a bit over £4. they've got to pay for the decor from somewhere!

Its funny that the only person I know who doens't like the mangla is a bangladeshi woman at work. she basically says its shit. I don't know if its just cos she's comparing it to the way she cooks stuff at home, or or that she don't like the oil-heavy kashmiri style, or maybe its a bangladesh-pakistani thing. Still I like it.

I tell you where is fucking well-brown for a meal out in sheffield though, estikutum on staniforth road, just out of attercliffe. Basically its an all-you-can-eat indian, chinese and thai place. However the main thing which sets it appart from your usuual all-you-can-eat places (like those generic chinese places in town etc etc) is that the food is as good if not better than a normal restaurant, rather than being shitter and you having to make up for it in volume. Very nice modern but relaxed decor, and its massive, used to be a pub. No smoking or booze allowed in. Indian stuff makes up about 60% of the dishes, with also some really nice thai stuff, and the chinese stuff used to be just OK but now is quite good too. The indian meat dishes are generally done on the bone so loads of flavour, and in the middle theres a guy manning a couple of tandoors so will cook you nann breads fresh to order. loads of good starters and salads, and to cap it all off a desert bar withs the usual icegream and gateau, but also often endless trays of gulab jamun, lichees, rasmalai and some wierd nice caramelised carrot shit, and often other esoterica. To cap it all off theres always a guy in some blinged out asian attire who openes the door for you, and the customer carpark round the back always has a guy on duty so no worries about your motor getting done over. all that for £8.90 a head. its well kubrick.

Bonjoy, a few years back I bumped into your good self and your man Cofe in a curry house in Sheffield.  Do you remember? Was that the Mangla emporium of which you speak so highly?

I remember it being very good, and certainly up there with the traditional Bradford curry house experience (I always used to go to the Kashmir, but I've heard tell that there are better places in Bradford these days?).
