Bavaria
June 04, 2006, 02:50:53 pm
I'm off to Bavaria climbing at the end of July and am instructing for a group of novice climbers.  Does anyone know of any guides or English language websites that have any topo's of the area?

I'm struggling to find anything on the net at all!  :please:

I also have a few days spare whilst there and am planning doing some bouldering so any previous experience would be good. I'm around the V4/5 level (on a good day!!!).

Any help would be much appreciated.  :bounce:

Kannst du Deutsch?

Hier fragen:                 http://www.kletter-forum.de/viewtopic.php?p=2806

I'm testing them right now to see if they will answer questions in English.  Most Germans speak good English.

Unfortunately I don't speak German, appart from the VERY basics. Ich Heise Steven, Ich bin 24 yarre alt, that kind of basic.

Im off to the SW of Bavaria. I'll climb on just about anything really, I don't have any preferances to rock type. I'm equally unimpressive on everything!!!

hi steven, if sw bavaria = allgaeu then check http://www.gebro-verlag.de/gebro/allgblock.htm (!attn!:sorry, commerical, but some basic infos without buying that guide) for bouldering. don't know of any web-topos for that area but there are print-versions...
however check the forum on climbing.de, there should be some locals (do post in english). hth

Well got out there and managed to find a guide ok from a climbing shop in Oberstdorf.  My basic German managed to get me by-I think although most peoples "basic" English was better than my own!

If anyone else heads out there the guide you'll be after is Allgau Rock.  Most crags we visited had nice new bolts and were very easy to find from the maps in the guide even without understanding the language.  The grades are all in UIAA but easy to convert with table provided.

The crags with lower grades get VERY crowded though, even during the week with groups ok kids top-roping.  German crag manners aint the same as ours either and they wont move to let you lead.  I'd advise anyone else going out there to start early (you'll get reasonable temperatures then too, it gets real hot and humind during day) to get your climbs in before the crouds arrive.

If anyone else needs any help on the area email me at steven@taylorsteven.orangehome.co.uk
