Kids bouldering mat
November 22, 2016, 01:35:33 pm
Does anyone know of a suitable small bouldering mat for a child... Without hinting our middle daughter has asked for one. Had a search and can't really see anything appropriate.
Cheers

For a child to do what? Land on, or to carry herself?

Dunno how big you were thinking but in Font I used the Moon starter pad with ours kids and it worked well for kids circuits. Might be discontinued now but others do similar, e.g.:
https://www.alpkit.com/products/waffa

Also handy to have for adult use, to slip into a full size mat for sit starts, circuits etc.

I've got a couple of sit start pads, but these don't have straps for carrying other than the small handles. Our eldest daughter has a home made pad ( one that a friend made out of an old bouldering mat ) but my sewing skills aren't up to much.
So ideally needs rucksack style carrying straps..
Thanks

Never used one but the Five Ten Organic briefcase pad looks like what you're after? Or the Wild Country Touchdown, but I'd feel shortchanged paying 130 quid for one as you could get a full size pad at a similar price!
Can you still get those little pod pads?

How old/tall is your daughter?

I've got an Alpkit Woomf ticked away at my parents I think which could be ideal - though now discontinued unfortunately. As Mark said, the Organic briefcase pad is also decent.

I won't be back home until Xmas now so depending on how soon you were still needing one then I could try and dig it out then.

I can sympathise.
I let my eldest carry our small Metolius once, when she was about 5, along the cliff top to the quarry by the old fort on Portland.
Gust of wind had me drop everything in panic and rugby tackle her as she almost went off the edge. It wasn't even that windy and it blew her a good twenty feet. Up to that point I thought she looked cute...

An old plastic covered cot mattress makes a good taco style pad and can usually be rolled up into a daysack. You need to put a couple of small holes in it to roll it.

I’m wary of the idea of using a smaller mat for kids. Whilst they might not need the full thickness of padding on a normal one I’m not convinced they don’t need the surface area.

Yep.
Especially when their spotter is too busy scratching his nuts.
