Jule retires, Udo sacked
July 14, 2015, 03:02:04 pm
I heard both of these things in Chamonix during the Lead World Cup but they now seem to be in the public domain.

World and European Champ Jule Wurm has retired.

Udo Neuman, German coach has (allegedly) been sacked from this role.

Why mention drugs?

Injury induced training regimes then. I don't know. What is the context / backstory?

From FB
"A great time of many years of competing in international and national climbing comps lies behind me and I decided that I'm at a point where I want to stop competing those big events. I feel like I've reached everything I've ever dreamed of in competition climbing.

I passed unforgettable moments, made friendships and made valuable experiences on travels to all different continents.

I personally feel that my motivation ebbed for a while. Competing in Worldcups demands quite a lot of dedication, lots of training, travels, hotels, isolation time, being focussed, and comps every summer.

I´m keen on having time for all differents things that lacked time during recent years. I´m psyched to spend more time on rocks and maybe doing some fun and less serious comps. Also having more time with my family & friends is something I'm looking forward to. And studying of course.

I want to THANK all the people who supported me, motivated me, inspired me, listened to me,... on my way to becoming the comp climber I used to be!!

THANK YOU, Dieter Oberbeck, Mike Schuh & Sascha Deiters, Burgi Beste & Klaus Hogrebe, Gunter Gäbel, Farid Touchi & Matthias Keller, Erwin Marz, Udo Neumann, Lukas Biniossek,

Jan, Alex, Mama & Papa.

Special thanks also to all good friends who have always been there for me over the last years!

A BIG thanks to my sponsors Mammut and Mad Rock Climbing and the German Alpine Club (DAV), for making travelling all over the world with a great team, possible.

This weekend I´ll do my last comp, the German Championship in Friedrichshafen (OutDoor show)!
Come around if you´re there or otherwise see you somewhere out there on rocks!!!"

Apparently not everyone in the German team got on with Udo, Jule most definitely did. Fill in the blanks yourself.

Ahhh. I have a soft spot for the Wurm, she was definitely one of the top participants last year, pity she couldn't stick WC 2015 to the finish, but good luck to her.

Being an actively competing world class athlete - in a sport involving no money or future prospects - and being a medical student perhaps not entirely compatible, time wise?

She'd also acheived pretty much everything (national, euro, world champ) too apart from the WC overall, can see why she binned it to finish her studies rather than trek all the way to china every year. Didn't realise the Udo stuff - must have been pretty strong feelings across the rest of the team for him to be sacked the moment she retires - awkward for Jan?

Understand her feelings, seems to be a common theme.

The sacking is odd though, Germany aren't exactly getting relegated or anything.
