Boulderising in April?
March 17, 2015, 04:14:24 pm
As of the 17th of Apr it becomes my cost to be living out of a hotel whilst my move to Lancashire is finalised. Thus, as that is expensive, I'd rather go on holiday  :devil-smiley:.

Where might be good to go bouldering around that time? Apart from Magic Wood I've done very little in Switzerland and I'm not too fussed about having perfect icy temps as long as there's plenty new to go at and it isn't going to be dire, skin shredding heat territory.

I've been negelcting routes training so bouldering would be far my preference but I'm open to other suggestions...

Any suggestions?

Some guys I met from Milan were raving about Chironico (may be spelled incorrectly) in switzerland.  They said it's perfect in April!

Though this is just their opinion and I know nothing about the place. Seemed like a big area though from a few vague google searches.

Yes, Chironico should be quite good in April. It's quite higher than Cresciano but not as high and shady as Magic.
Also, should temps be high, you still have Brione, although some areas are closed from March the 31st I think. You can find info on www.brionebouldering.com
Chironico is enormous and there's plenty to throw yourself at. Not too finger shredding but it's still quite a crimpy granite.
Have fun! Would be cool to meet.

Apologies for being a bit lazy here - accomodation - is there a bunkhouse (there'll just be Nat and I), and I take it, fly-drive to the nearest budget airline airport is the best bet?

Have fun! Would be cool to meet.

We flew Ryanair from Manchester to Bergamo, then about 4 hours drive from there (if I remember correctly!)

For Swiss, there's still the 1001 Bloc Hostel in Cresciano, and I think it's still possible to use the communal kitchen, but the place keeps changing owners/managers so you never know.
Otherwise there's the Gottardo campsite in Faido, very close to Chironico, and they have rooms. They also have restaurant and a bakery (that means fresh bread and pastries for breakfast!).
Otherwise small hotels here and there. Last time I stayed at Hotel Lavorgo, they make discounts for boulderers.
In general Swiss is expensive, and lately the Euro/Swiss Franc change rate has been unlocked, so prices for us Euros increased by roughly 15/20% overnight. Don't know its effects on the mighty Pound.
If you need to eat out, I highly recommend Pizzeria Ristorante Leventina, in Bodio. The biggest portions ever.

That is one portion of pasta, one salad and one steak. Hadn't I been a pig, it would have lasted for four people.

Wow that place looks expensive (and I know, Switzerland) for what it is!

Boulderising abroad in April has morphed into Trad in the UK, namely Cornwall. Training on a 50' board is perfect for trad, right?
