Ben Moon and others talking about their diaries. Quite long (40mins) and not much new about climbing apparently but good to have a climber in the mainstream media

Anybody remember "Hard Fire Inside" a Radio 3 or 4 documentary in the late 80's or early 90's with Jerry? Be good to listen to that again

Not too bad but still a bit cringe worthy!

:agree: Nice to hear him in such a context, although I really wish they would stop with this "climbing is incredibly dangerous" bollox, and that someone like Ben could come along prepared to succinctly highlight the difference between sport-climbing / bouldering (logistically simple, physically hard, focused on athleticism) and traditional climbing (more adventurous, more complex, more pychologically involved, maybe more risky (but not just "dangerous")).

Also it seems to be hard for people to separate mountaineering and rock climbing in their minds.

And when they asked why do you climb up a rock face Ben just said it's exciting. I wanted him to say because when your performing at your limit it feels like the best thing ever!

Wasn't that where he said something along the lines of "I don't climb to be in beautiful places" or something and created what classed as a media storm in those days (I.e. a pompous letter to High Magazine)? I don't remember Jerry being on it, was there more than one episode?

I'm pretty sure it was Jerry who described his motivation like "being a hard fire inside" but cant remember there being more than one episode.

Hard Fire Inside - 1987 Radio Documentary

Quote
Written and presented by Dave Sheasby
Rock climbing continues to be popular with its growing and dedicated band of practitioners, but as Dave Sheasby finds out, there is sometimes more than a clash of opinion about how it should be done and why. Producers DAVE SHEASBY and ED THOMASON. BBC North East

The presenter subsequently wrote this radio play:

Coming Down....1988
8 Dec 1988. A journalist tries to get a story from a group of rock climbers holding a wake for a friend who fell to his death. (Footnote: shortly before this play was produced, Dave Sheasby was the presenter for a radio documentary about rock climbers: Hard Fire Inside, 5 Oct 1987)
