Castle Hill, NZ - Crashpad hire?
March 09, 2015, 07:45:02 pm
I'm planning to visit Castle Hill in a few days time, but am travelling without a bouldering mat. Does anyone know if it is possible to hire one in the area?
Thanks in advance.

Bivouac (outdoor shop) at Tower Junction in Christchurch hires BD mats (

). The backpackers in Springfield hires mats as does the petrol station. The store / cafe in Springfield also hires mats but last time i saw one (nearly 3 yrs ago) they were fucked.

I hired one from the Springfield store at Christmas and it was fine. Not pristine, but fine, and only $20 (I think) for the day.

Word on the Springfield pad hire. Didn't actually see the pads but the landings are so good up there that you don't need much.

Also, not sure what sort of trip you're on, but if you're in a self contained camper you can drive down and camp on the shore of Lake Lyndon - just a little way down the pass from Castle Hill on the Christchurch side. Fantastic views of the stars!
