Combined results, what a daft idea. If this goes ahead are we going to see all the top boulderers and lead climbers doing all three events for the next few years in order to try and qualify for the olympics?

This triathlon approach is a little odd - my guess is it's to appease all three factions, which whilst admirable, doesn't necessarily lead to the best sport.

my main concern is that a focus on multi tasking may provide an opportunity for female athletes to do better than manly heroes

But karate should be in, better than taikwondo or judo as a spectator sport, loads of participants and not trying to run kata, kumite together. incorporating all 3 climbing categories together is just shit.

Or it might be because the IOC doesn't want to give out loads of new medals and this way we respect their wishes AND don't have to pick between the 3 disciplines. It is worth remembering that when we were initially on the short list the IFSC polled the national federations to see which discipline should be proposed - Lead narrowly won over Boulder.

There is already a good deal of cross over between Lead and Boulder and very little between Speed and the others so obviously (IMHO) it will be a Jorg/Sean/MinaM who does best climbing Speed at around 7 seconds (for the men) rather than one of the Speed specialists

When was that? And wonder if it polled now if it would get a similar result. Rather have triathlon format than lead though.

Who in the federations was polled? The members or the managers?

Either way, it would be better to poll audiences.

Here's a poll from 8a.nu done this year. Regardless of whether you like the website (or the limited options possible on this poll), there were 1,228 votes for bouldering and 528 for lead (and 820 for a combined event).

Btw, I understand that this is all very political and if this is the only option on the table I'd rather see a combined event in the olympics than no event.
