Campus board outside - will I just not use it?
September 26, 2013, 05:17:44 pm
I'm thinking of constructing a campus board outside. It would have a roof and be weather proof but would essentially be open to the elements. So no chilling with a cup of tea, music, light and warmth etc. This would primarily be used in winter months which means training during daylight (though I guess I could rig lighting if I was bothered).

I like the idea despite the limitations but do wonder if I'll end up with an unused and unloved folly because I'm a bit of a fairweather climber and like some creature comforts.

Has anyone else put up a board, of any kind, in the sort of style I'm talking about and then ended up not really bothering with it once the initial enthusiasm has dwindled?  :badidea:

Does it get cold and minging outside often? If so, you already have the answer above.

Either it's folly and the romance of having a campus-board under a gazebo will soon wear off when confronted by the reality of not wanting to use your new creation when it's 5 degrees and raining, or, you invest in a way to make it comfortable enough to be enjoyable through the winter, in which case it could be awesome. I doubt you'll relish using it without any heat source.

The last person I saw a video of campusing outside was Rich Simpson and look how that ended.

My thoughts.
Will the floor be dry, or just the board? A wet/icy landing would put you off training.
Where will you warm up? Pulling straight on a campus board is just asking for an injury.
Do you have any motivated friends? Training on your own is rubbish, and as Moo says, may lead to you telling porky pies about your accomplishments and losing your sponsorship deal.

How much do you campus indoors?
How's your motivation?

I live in North Wales so I'd be lying if I said no but between decent weather days and motivation I think I could maybe get over myself?

Also, the most viable board location is virtually right beside the back door so I can easily nip inside during rest. So on reflection I may not totally miss out on the creature comforts.

Nice touch Pete! Aren't these Satan's spawn when it comes to the environment though? If I was to go down a heat source route I could look at those infra red bar lamps - I think they might be a bit more reasonable in terms of space, energy consumption and efficiency?

Yes, slate waste floor so no issues there. I have a finderboard inside (which by the way I use quite a bit, I just want something a bit more full body and I guess I somehow feel that campus boarding [feet on] is very akin to route climbing, very specific and totally measurable, all things that appeal). I'll worry about my sponsorship when I get it  8)

Actually, I do remember a video of Rich Simpson campus boarding outside at home - maybe this sowed the seed?

I rarely campus inside as I either do routes or boulder. I have used a campus board before however, enjoyed it and wanted to use it more.

Motivation is huge but I know I'm at my best with the sun on my back. That said I also know that I get great satisfaction from training and that it's part of what helps progress towards routes and problems I want to do.

The more I think about it the more I think the board wouldn't end up unused; I think this thread has probably helped clarify things in that respect so thanks all for the replies.

Cool!
Think also about how much humidity could affect the rungs.
Good luck!

This is totally psyche dependent. If you have clear goals and structure and can get on it at specified times with the enthusiasm to use it then you won't have a problem.

You've got to be motivated to go out there in drizzle when it's 2 degrees after a day at work.
I know I probably wouldn't be arsed, especially as campus training is boring anyway...

will you be in the public eye?  and if so, is the likely to less or more motivating?!

I'd be more worried about his killer bees swarming! Although they'll probably be all tucked up in their beds with a thimble of cocoa over the winter.

I wouldn't worry, there's a 5% chance it's nothing to be concerned about.
