It seems like whenever I do a fair bit down the bouldering wall, I get a painful, stiff lower back which I'm convinced is from the impact of landing when I fall or jump off.  It's top the extent where I sometimes struggle to reach forward and put my socks on the next morning!  I feel like I need to somehow strengthen the muscles at the base of my back, but I'm unsure what specific exercises to do.

Anywbody experienced anything similar, and found any good exercises to do?  I remember reading somewhere about how folks seriously into highballing had got into doing specific conditioning to get them ready for falling off from quite high.  Any idea what sort of stuff they were doing?

Cheers in advance

I have exactly the same thing and Although I can't pinpoint the exact time it started it definitely got worse after I fell, although I think it was more the jar from the slip than the impact. My Back muscles spasmed and took about 6 weeks  to deblock enough for me to climb.

I was diagnosed as having a 'slipped' disc and associated sciatica. It took a few months of therapy and still causes discomfort when standing for too long. As I understand it the back muscles spasm to protect the spine, so seeking specialist advice would be a good idea.

Having said that the exercises I was given by my physio were first to stretch the back muscles and secondly to strengthen the core muscles. From other reading I've done it seems these have to be done for life.

I've recently moved flat and had to do a lot of lifting, skipped a lot of my exerciss and I notice it getting a little worse.

Be careful.

I have this problem which is excerbated by years of jumping/ falling off pre mats. I suspect whether or not you get problems probably relates to your back history.
My solution avoid high things or climb down a bit.
