Netgear Readynas Duo (silent modded)
October 03, 2012, 10:46:16 pm
as above I'm selling my Readynas Duo. This is a special one as it's had an extra large silent fan fitted to it so it runs at around 916rpm and is as near as silent as i think you'll get without using an SSD and / or a heatsink the size of a fridge.

No HDDs are included as I need those - this has run flawlessly with 2 x 2TB drives in it and has always been available on the network and served media via DLNA whenever I needed it to.

Memory upgraded to 1Gb, verified compatible Kensington branded RAM.

I'm after £50 collected from Sheff, or posted for the extra cost of RMSD

I will take it if it is still available. Working nights so might be the weekend before I can collect though

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm after a bit of advice. What size fan did you use and how "silent" was it afterwards?

I tried replacing the stock fan on mine with a better 60mm fan but it still isn't quiet enough. Did you do one of those Frankenstein jobs bolting an 80mm fan onto the outside of the back plate?

do you have a massive problem with the noise of the ReadyNas? Once I've enabled spin-down its pretty quiet for me most of the time.

Yes. Not while I'm actually using the PC; the problem is that it's audible (in the living room, and I have no other suitable location for it at the moment) when I'm not using it. And the startup and shutdown times are long enough that I find it irritating to be constantly switching it on & off, especially as it has things on it like my music library that I use all the time.

Mine was a Frankenstein job using a 'silent' fan on rubber mounts, it did work, barely audible even in te desk where I work. Part of the noise reduction comes from a bigger fan cooling more effectively at much lower rpm. 916rpm in mine
