Heaters
January 06, 2015, 03:26:57 pm
Having just moved house my board is now in a garage rather than an underfloor heated annex. So I was wondering what other folk use in order to heat their training facilities or does everyone just man up.

Fire pits. Staffed by scantily clad well oiled specimens.

My board is in a concrete floored unheated garage. I found flooring it out in interlocking rubber tiles (I used easimat which I found on Amazon) made a massive difference to the perceived comfort and usability of the garage, if not to the actual temperature. Walking around without cold damp concrete sucking the heat out of your feet made it hugely more comfortable. Otherwise I have a couple of very small electric fan heaters but they only get used on the very coldest days while I warm up and are then off for the duration. IIRC the floor tiles are pretty cheap - it cost ~£100 to cover 4.5m by 3m.

So he can smoke cigars, drink brandy and read the paper in comfort - under the pretence of training. A looped tape of groans, grunts and mat slapping (!!) noises keeps Mrs Webbo happy that all is well in the "training facility"...

I have no need to go into the garage to drink Brandy as Mrs Webbo is more than happy to share a bottle. I did think of lighting the Chiminea and sticking that in the garage but I was worried it may lead to Mrs Webbo thinking she could use the garage for smoking kippers.

Probably also a very serious CO risk and best avoided

I thought it was in the UKIP constitution that members should smoke.

Given what they seem to believe its more likely the crack pipe...

I know you've got some useful answers already (well, one), but this thread might also help

Little propane space-heaters like this are great for quickly bringing a cold garage up to a nice temperature. A bit of outlay incurred on the cylinder deposit.

I suggest sipping from a cup of warm Man Up and getting on with it. Or plushing out the garage floor with layers of old carpets found in loft when we moved in and offcuts like mine. The ones in the loft you could go down through the layers and date fairly accurately based on colours.

Fan heaters are an incredibly in-efficient (read expensive) way to heat an un insulated and draughty garage.

The reason is that and electric fan/panel/oil filled radiator  tries to heat up the air contained within the garage.  This will leak away faster than you can open a utility bill and scream how much.

By contrast The gas heater mentioned by bubs, or a radiant electric heater
http://www.heatersuk.com/c/250386/1/portable-quartz-halogen-electric-radiant-heaters.html

doesn't attempt to heat the air in the room,  it just radiates heat out, which you feel on your face/body.  Think of bonfire night when your stood 50 yards from the fire, you face is nice and warm, but the air temp outdoors is still only a few degrees C.

Its an interesting concept to get your head round - the idea of 'feeling' warm, rather than 'being' warm.  Like bouldering outdoors on a perfectly sunny, still yet frosty day.

lining the floor with anything - rubber, carpet, chipboard etc will stop heat being conducted from your feet and again your comfort levels rise.

Having said that, running a 2kW radiant heater or a 2kW fan heater for 1 hour will still cost you the same amount of money, but I suspect the radiant heater will make you 'feel' warmer.

I bought 2 2000kw fan heaters for 10 quid each. I had one on for the first 30 mins of my session by then I'd got warm enough to take my hat off. Mind still did a couple of spectacular dismounts due to cold/plastic skin on my fingers.
