Roaches after rain?
October 31, 2012, 04:13:15 pm
So, me and a friend were thinking about heading up to the Roaches for tomorrow and Friday. The forecast is for good weather with plenty of wind, but it's obviously pissing it down today. :'( Does anybody know how quickly various areas dry out after heavy rain?

Thanks in advance for the help UKB!

Upper tier boulders dry more or less instantly, lower tier less so.

I avoid climbing in this area after rain. Even when it's dry to touch, the rock seems weaker. I put off climbing stretch Armstrong years ago because it was like this. When I went back in 2010 the holds had worn into stirrups. I think their should be greater dialogue in the climbing community to protect these areas. We don't want stirrups and broken flakes because people don't know the importance of being patient.

If Roaches is a washout, there is some stuff at Churnet that stays dry in light rain, but I can't remember which bits.

There is always the lower tier at Ramshaw. Not a lot of problems but mostly dry, and the baldstones traverse is another good bet when it's damp..

I think you maybe being a little self righteous, the rock up there is very soft, this probably happened regardless of climbing in slightly dubious conditions.  Although i take your point that all grit stone is very soft in the wet and shouldn't be climbed on in the wet.

Wright's is pretty decent when there has been a bit of rain

[/quote]I think it's a shame you think that this is self righteous. I'm under no illusion that my actions in climbing areas have no impact. I think we can all be a little more mindful of this and do what we can to reduce our impact. Some people are ignorant and/or uneducated to how grit and sandstone react when they're wet. It's negligent not to try to help to preserve what we have.
