Fiend: A product of his environment?
April 19, 2004, 10:58:34 am
Well Cocktalk is surpassing itself as usual with another long thread attacking another user; Fiend.

Now I realise he's often wound people up considerably on that fine forum, but hasn't he been well behaved on here. :clapclap:

Perhaps Fiend isn't so bad afterall, a loose cannon of climbing nonsense  perhaps, but I reckon the spark that sets off that cannon is the general disrespectful attitudes of the regular users on Cocktalk.

I think we should be proud that our little community here has been able to bring out the best in someone.

Perhaps I'm wrong, what do you think?

Ha! Well....points of note:

- I don't get calling the UKC forums "cocktalk"....sure it has it's flaws and fair share of fuckwits, but a lot of positive stuff comes out of it - good discussions, a broad community, good climbing partners...

- "a loose cannon of climbing nonsense perhaps" - Hey, I stand by everything I write whether it's a blatant wind-up or not. I stand by all the grading and ethical discussions, and by any unusual or esoteric ideas I put forward. It's all CLIMBING discussion, right?? And I had hoped climbers were open-minded enough to explore a variety of ideas and approaches (obviously I've been rapidly disillusioned there   )

- "I reckon the spark that sets off that cannon is the general disrespectful attitudes of the regular users on Cocktalk." - not really, although sometimes I play up to their perceptions and prejudices for a bit of fun. I think I come from the opposite direction to a lot of the bullshit on UKC - I post about climbing and will happily discuss stuff in depth....they go for superficiality, shooting the messenger and ignoring the message, thinking within the box, personal vendettas etc etc...

- As for coming on here, well it's a different forum. I managed to behave myself on YorkshireGrit too   It's someone's personal forum really and they set the rules, and it's obvious from reading this for a few weeks that a certain standard of behaviour is encouraged and promotes a more civilised atmosphere. Which is cool. Although I have had to resist the temptation to abuse FH    And as Loner says, this place is good because it's properly focused on climbing, I knew I could get some reasonably sensible answers to bouldering questions... Actually, I do wish the Rocktalk portion of UKC was more like this, somewhere that could be relied on for proper climbing views without any of the nonsense. Ah well. UKrouting.com anyone??
