Roquebrune-sur-argens/Nice
February 17, 2012, 03:28:28 pm
I'm heading over to Nice next week to watch my girlfriend do pony things (no, not like that) and ive got a couple of days free. I know Annot is close and was thinking of heading up there, but it looks crap. Apparently there's another place called roquebrune-sur-argens with 200 problems!? Its in a europe guide, but I can't seem to find a topo anywhere. Anyone been there? Or know of anything okayish around the Nice area? Anything? At all?

Cheers!

This is the south side of the crag. The North side is next to the motorway and as I drove past I remember thinking that it looked to have decent bouldering. There are loads of pretty decent size boulders all along the base of the crag with what appeared to be reasonable landings. Caveat, I didn't climb there so I might be talking Bollocks.

It is a fair distance from Nice though, 100 odd km, just west of Frejus.

Mike Owen lives in Nice and is apparently on facebook. If you could get in contact with him I am sure he could suggest something.

Look on the drop down box Les sites. 06 is the area of Nice. Cabris appears to be a bouldering area.

If you're in Vidabaun then you're only a half hour away from the Gorges Du Blavet. I went to check the bouldering out there a few years ago, but without a guide I only managed to find one bloc and did routes instead. A quick google turned up this, and this.

Mike is dedicated chuffer now. I have friends who live in Nice and they just go to Annot, there's not same vibe as in the UK regarding minor venues - they'll travel an hour to somewhere major, or go indoors, they just don't do esoterica like we do.

I would definitely give roquebrene a go at least once. It looked promising and the boulders are on the north facing side of the massif, so should not be too hot.

Yeah, pretty interesting. It seems the bouldering can be divided into two parts - the boulders on the rocky plain to the left, and the boulders in the wood.

On the rocky plain there's some choss (eg on the roof right at the base of the cliff at the top), although some of the bouldering was quite nice. There's a slightly overhanging wall with crimps on about halfway up the slope which was cool.

The bouldering in the woods was weird. There are loads of boulders (and some awesome looking rooves), but lots of them are blank. Some pockets have been drilled, but no-one really seems to climb here and as a result there are spider webs on most things. The woods have quite a spooky feel to them too and there are some ruined buildings and a church up the top of the woods.

There's also some more bouldering near the Blavet Gorge area (which is the cliffy bit opposite Roquebrunne), but most was quite widely spaced so I just took a look around so can't comment on the climbing.

Probably worth a look if you're in the area, but definitely don't make a trip there! Having said that, there's a lot of rock around that area - I'm sure some of the locals must know some good stuff.

Anyway I hope this helps anyone heading out there! If you're reading this and have any questions just PM me or something.
