I've been browsing through a couple of project management software suites (open source) but wondered whether anybody has experience of a good platform that is available for both Mac OSX and Windows. I'm looking to develop a series of goals and have them assigned to a number of individuals. Any info greatly appreciated.

A few are listed here:

Briefly played with the cloudy http://gantter.com/. Hooks into Google Drive nicely. Not sure if it's all free or limited use for free.

Obi, that is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you very much for saving me hours of searching!

I'm just curious Obi - how long did you use Gantter for?

I really like that I can log in via Gmail credentials, use Google Drive for storage and the fairly simplistic layout of the schedule (both column and chart). There do seem to be a few platform rendering issues in Safari at least (scrolling down the column seems to only work if you use the cursor in a row to manually move down for example).

I recently purchased some server space and I wondered whether there might be any other open source software packages that would allow me to exploit my existing storage space rather than signing up to a plan?

It's all new to me but for the purposes I want (assessing business feasibility), marking tasks against users and having agreed timescales are about the main criteria for now.

10 more suggestions (may overlap with the suggestions you found).

Another list

An even bigger list  (GPL == GNU Public License == Open Source; LGPL == Lesser GNU Public License == Open Source; BSD license == Generally free to use and redistribute; CPAL == Common Public Attribution License == Open Source)

Never used any of them though so can't comment.

Used Gantter once - seemed a bit awkward, but got the job done.

For day-to-day task management Trello is pretty good.

TBH I've really only used it to open MS Project files that I've been sent on computers without Project installed.

ProjectLibre (previously OpenProj) is probably the closest alternative to MS Project

Thanks guys.

Just when I think I've stumbled on the answer, I discover something else that seems to be better. I'm keen to get the best solution for my purpose. This ProjectLibre looks to have a slick interface and quite a lot of hype.

Just in case anybody is interested:

I upgraded my Joomla CMS software on my server and spent the last couple of weeks learning a little about it. I've managed to install Projectfork as a Joomla extension. The reviews all seem to be solid and from speaking directly with the (extremely helpful) developers, everything would appear to be very good. This does appear to have solved my cloud storage dilemma in any case since it's totally free.

I'm sure I'll have additional feedback soon.

Add in Asana to your mix - quite task focused.

Thanks Barratt. I've now changed my mind for the 12 millionth time and gone with your recommendation - it's just so simple and from what I can gather, unlimited in terms of cloud storage.

I'll keep the Projectfork extension to my site as I'm sure it'll have some other use in future.
