Guide books - General rule on the "line"?
November 24, 2011, 10:20:19 pm
I am wondering if there is a general rule in guidebooks (I guess specifically John Coefield and Jon Barton's "peak district: climbing", as this is the main guide I am using) as to if the dotted route line is for your hands, or feet?

Obviously a straight up route it doesn't matter, but when the route traverses a groove crack etc and the line follows that, should your hands or feet be following that?

Cheers
Gary

Its usually fairly obvious when you're stood underneath it.

If not then it will become apparent once you're actually climbing (and taking into account the grade).

It's usually the line your hands follow on traverses, mate. It won't necessarily denote the exact line , I.e. there may be holds above and below, and also it doesn't mean you can't chuck a heel above your hands if you need to!

I always thought the line represented the tube you have to take your centre of gravity through.

Any deviation from that tube and you lose points; FACT!  :???:

Points? Eh? If your C of G leaves the tube, you'd fall off. That's why its a tube.

Wait a minute.

What diameter is this tube?

Can you get your limbs through the tube walls?

I'm a bit confused

Diameter depends on the problem obviously, and the point within the problem. Imagine an imaginary, transparent duodenum.

Yes, of course limbs can penetrate. Otherwise I would have said 'body', not C of G.

Think I have got that,

Based on the above, and ignoring the tube, I will use the line as a guide for my hands unless it looks easier another way :)

Ignore the tube at your peril.
