Skin creasing up at finger joints
September 27, 2011, 09:57:07 pm
Hey up. Im trying to do some circuits (and endurance stuff on the BM) at the moment but finding I'm having to cut sessions short due to this particulary lame skin problem. I find the skin creases/pinches up at the joint to the point where the skin from the middle section of the finger actually overlaps the skin on the end pad of the finger.  If that makes sense...
It hurts big time and I get small blisters forming immediately below the joint.
I've been carefully sanding any thick skin below the joint, which has helped with the blisters.

Anyone else get the same problem? Any advice? (other than climbing on smaller holds!).
Cheers folks.

I get this on middle and little fingers. Get some sandpaper/emery board and sand them down. After doing that apply moisturiser. Also after every climbing session make sure you wash all the chalk off, especially from those creases, and moisturise after.

Sorry, just read your post properly and saw you already sand them down. Apologies for being a forum punter.

I got a similar problem trying to do circuits on a board that was about 45deg meaning that I had to use pretty big holds to get round more than one circuit. Unfortunately the only idea I came up with was to stop doing circuits on such a steep board and get back on more sensible angled walls where I could use smaller holds. The general lack of circuit boards at 30deg overhanging around the North West is a particular annoyance, something like the climbing works one would be perfect.

So two posts down and not a single piece of useful advice. Man, I'm good at this.

I find it helps to make sure you seat your fingers just right before pulling on, rather than just 'grabbing' (for want of a better word) the hold/s. I only notice it when doing 2 finger hangs, which I find nails anyway, but more so if my fingers aren't seated right.

I get this, too. Even though I sand / moisturise regularly. I find it happens when my fingers start to slip, the skin kind of gathers up and creates that 'fold' which you mention. I find that it's that which stops me rather than an arm pump or whatever. Rather annoying.

Thanks a lot everyone. Good advice and good (in a way) to know other people get the same problem. Exactly as you say Steve, its skin pinching up towards the end of a circuit that causes me to stop, rather than pump. This is only after 3 or 4 reps of a 30 move circuit so it really limits the session.

ShortRound - Totally agree about the angle of the board (45) meaning Im having to use bigger holds for circuits. Sadly I think the nearest 30 degree ish circuit board is about 200 miles away.

Cofe - Agree also about seating the fingers right on the fingerboard, almost pressing the fingers forward into the rungs so the 'fold' doesnt form.

Update - had a session today and tried finger tape over the worst joints. Obviously brings another set of annoyances (tape slipping etc) but at least I was able to climb for a bit longer, until I got too annoyed and gave up.
