What should I do with my classic Kona?
September 01, 2011, 06:53:35 pm
My original 1991 Kona Lava Dome that I got for my 18th birthday is still sat in the garage. I haven't used it in years but not sure what to do with it. Not too bothered about trying to get any cash for it (even if it was worth anything) but don't really want to give it away to any old random. Could do it up myself but realistically probably never gonna get the time and if I did wouldn't ride it much.

If anyone wants a project to do up for fun let me know, prefer it know it was being used/cherished than rotting in the garage (that i'm trying to clear out) for another 10 years. Oh yeah and don't try and do a freecycle (ie. take it to sell on,  :spank:)

Identical to the one in this thread, I think mine is 18inch.

if you don't find someone who wants it whole i have an explosif from the same year that is missing some bits. be so good to get my hands on a velocity stem and project 2 forks although dismantling this beauty seems a bit wrong.

 I remember being very jealous of Explosif owners when I got my Lava dome!
(by the way, that icon is supposed to be drooling not being sick!)

Hmmm, that is quite tempting. It'd be very interesting to see how it rode compared with modern bikes. Although I might never want to see another mountain bike after this weekend!

How about trying these guys:

http://www.cyclerecycle.org.uk/

Saw an article about them in Singletrack and they sounded quite a worthwhile cause.

...damn, I've come over all wistful now Ben.  I loved my Explosif and then through sheer stupidity, had it nicked.  Still one of the best hardtails I've ever ridden, sigh   :'(

Had a Lave Dome too Obi!  Could take it on as a project if I didn't already have far too many bikes.  Hope you find a good home for it....

Alright Toby, I might be interested in this. I don't need a bike as I've just put one together from a Specialized I got for £16 on eBay and some cheap bits, however it did reawaken a bit of a tinkering obsession once I'd found all my old tools. What does it need doing with it? In a perverse way I'd be more interested if it was in a right state! (Although I'm sure you would understand this!).

Nice! I had a black one, couldn't quite stretch the piggybank to a Cindercone!

Was going to suggest the same. A great idea.

I've been contemplating getting a bike to burn around the Peak on for a couple of months now (after a trip to Bolivia doing some great MTB stuff) and have even considered getting a set of shocks for my Cannondale badboy that I ues as my city bike (can't afford to splash out on anything much right now).

Would it need too much work to get into a decent rideable condition?

If we're not talking £hundreds to get it up and running I'd be interested in giving it a good home.

PM me if you're interested... I'm in Sharrow.

:D
