Virus Advice
June 09, 2011, 09:29:56 am
I'm very laxed on the virus protection front and i think i may have picked something up now. I had some issues with my pc start up yesterday. When i try and go to Facebook now firefox directs me to a message saying they can't confirm the connection is secure. So i'm scared to open Facebook and my email. I downloaded Spy Bot Search and Destroy and that got rid of some stuff. I'm a bit clueless about this sort of thing so any advice appreciated.

Try using the
NoScript
Firefox plugin. Enable it to block all scripts globally and then only allow scripts from sites you trust (if you trust Farcebook that is
)
Although there is another obvious solution, now where did I leave my drum?

I just tried to install that and got the Firefox warning again saying the connection is untrusted. Don't know what to do about this!

Have you got any anti-virus installed? And any anti-malware/spyware?
If not then I'd recommend
Avira Free
and
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
.
If Firefox isn't playing then try Internet Explorer.

Cheers, i've got some anti virus stuff on my system but i've not been using it much. Firefox will allow me to go to the sites from the warning page but i'm worried its warning me for a good reason. IE doesn't have the same warnings. I'm just a bit worried about opening stuff like email and farcebook. Am i being too paranoid or should i just crack on?
Jim its your fault

What Firefox
might
be warning you of is that there is possibly some
phishing
going on, where it appears that you're going to the correct site, but actually its not.
I've not got much more insight/advice to offer I'm afraid as its not anything I've ever had to deal with in the past 11 years or so, sorry.

Are you trying to open secure sites? You might just need to add the appropriate security exceptions in Firefox.

Post some screenshots using imageshack, as that will allow those reading to see what the error message is that you're getting.

Thats double dutch to me slackers, the firefox warning page says:
This Connection is Untrusted
You have asked Firefox to connect
securely to
www.facebook.com
, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
Normally, when you try to connect securely,
sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.
What Should I Do?
If you usually connect to
this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is
trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

thats a bad cert error - which happens either when the site you are going to has an untrusted cert, or - as I dont have problems with faceache today, then perhaps you have virus which is redirecting where fb resolves.
click start | run | type cmd and press enter
type ping
www.facebook.com
- what do you get back?

I googled the error message and some guy was asking the same question. He got a reply saying you're clock is wrong. Sure enough my clock and date has gone all to cock , it keeps changing, i changed it and tried again and went straight to facebook. So should be sorted, don't know what's up with my clock though!

furry muff word.
Your clock - does it change when you boot the computer? cos if it does then that could be your CMOS clock or battery is out. You know when it boots, theres a splash screen before you get to windows? usually theres a press F2 to setup type option - press that and you can see what the hardware clock on the motherboard is set to. If it keeps reverting at boot time then I suggest its a battery problem with your motherboard clock battery thing.
You can buy these in the supermarket mate. Simple swap...
