Quality Small Areas
April 26, 2011, 11:48:26 am
i have got a couple of weeks off work soon and i fancy heading to lots small but quality venues, places that would only really warrent a single trip with problems up to about 7B, I'm thinking places like Harmer's and Pex. I'm based in Leek but will be making a trip to the pass for a few days, anything in staffs/Cheshire/N.Wales or on the path to the Pass would be great, if these were in guides or had online topos it would be all the better.

Cheers

Craig y longridge is worth a look, maybe too far north for you though, depends on how far you want to travel. Have a search on here for boatloads of info plus a conditions report.

Cheshire fits the bill perfectly. When is this likely to be?

I'm off from the 7-15th of May, hoping for a few days in the pass then some smaller esoteric areas for the rest. What would you reccommend in Cheshire after Pex and Harmers?

Also Brownstones is worth a visit if you're heading that way.
You're missing out quality venues if you miss out Lancs ;)

Pantymwyn have two good, indepenadant problems at 7A and 7A+ and then a number of variants on them all the way up to 8A+. There are also few other problems to keep you busy. The best thing about Pantymwyn is that its a really lovely spot but to be honest I wouldn't go too far out of my way to visit.

I presume you're after bouldering - in which case Frodsham is the other obvious choice. But, to be honest, Harmers and Pex should give you more than enough to be going on with. Get in touch nearer the time and I might be able to give a guided tour one afternoon/evening.

Cofe reminds me I haven't been to Grinshill - a gap in my esoteric Marches sandstone CV. It would involve more of a detour for Krank than Cheshirethough.

not too far from Leek though compared to the others. Certainly worth a day I reckon, and to tick one of the best problems in the country*.

*I may have been getting carried away with that comment...

So, to Wales via Shropshire and Hope Mountain maybe (haven't been), then back via Pantymwn/Cheshire? And scrub Lancashire?

Edit, if you go to Shropshire the Little Northumberland wall at Nesscliffe is excellent.

Hope Mountain's never been documented? Its sandstone right? - maybe it should go in the new Cheshire guide, its not that far away. Would anyone have the knowledge?

cheers everybody, these should keep me busy for the week or so. Cofe, do you know roughly where this mega arete is at grinshill, is it called Indifference? it sounds right up my street.

Think it's actually called Terminator or something unsuitable like that. Prow Area? Johnny Brown's groove thing to the left is good too.
