Indoor to Outdoor
March 05, 2011, 12:31:41 am
This might be a unanswerable thing really but here goes..

I have a friend who really enjoys indoor bouldering but will come outdoors when persuaded. He seems to still enjoy indoors more, and usually complains that outdoor he can get easily scared and finds the holds less friendly than indoor.

Anyone got any motivational tips etc. that might help? Or should I just accept he is being a wuss and isnt getting the best from real rock?

Surely the UKB answer to this problem is to feel smugly superior...or do you need a spotter! ;)

Ultimately, it's just a matter of getting used to it. So further gentle encouragement should eventually pay dividends, unless he is determined to keep it plastic.

Might have just answered me there Jim. Been to pretty obscure crags really. Went to Rothley first since it was nearest to him, which i don't really rate, there is the odd good problem. Then yesterday we went to Hepburn which does have some excellent problems but is a pretty small venue.

Should probably take him to Bowden and if he doesnt like it there then i'll give up.

(Dont need him as a spotter, I just personally dont see the point in climbing indoors lots and then not doing the real thing, I get so bored of going to the wall all the time)

You can only do it so much before you realise you are having to drag them out and get fed up, he may come around on his own

I know someone who pretty much only boulders indoors (despite being very good - 7B/C) - as they seem to just not like mud and the general 'dirtyness' (their word) of being in the great outdoors. Bonkers if you ask me,...

I think it's just a case of getting used to it...

It can be frustrating at first not being able to find the holds and letting your grades take a hit (I'm still at this stage!) but it's still much more satisfying finishing a proper grit problem or such like.

Maybe the best thing to do is sort out betas... the worst thing in the world is not knowing what to pull on.
