Budgeting for a long trip
January 29, 2011, 07:42:21 pm
Recently started my first 'proper' job, with the plan of getting some experience and saving up for approx 3 years, then leaving to go travel with the girlfriend for 6 months to a year (budget dependent). We have a vague-ish plan of the main places we want to go to - what I would like to ask is, could those who have been to these parts of the world give an idea of living costs. I know this varies on how you do it, but as a guide we will be scumming it a bit (but not completely). Camping/dossing where possible, cheap accomodation if not. Mostly climbing but with the odd bit of obligatory tourism thrown in. Not too worried about flight costs (I can find these out quite easily).

The plan is:

- Cheap east asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) onto a bit of expensive east asia (Japan)
- Australia (Mostly NSW/Victoria) onto NZ
- At least 3 months across Canada/USA (climbing areas on the west coast, fly to east coast for shorter time). Considering hiring a van and road tripping, not too keen on the risk of buying (and yes, have seen the thread on this)

Also keen to know which are the crags to visit, and which are over-rated. Keen on trad/sport/bouldering, though won't have the time or money (or gear space) for big-walling. Current ideas:

Aus/NZ - Arapiles, Grampians, Castle Hill
Canada/USA - Squamish, Bishop, Needles, Yosemite, Indian Creek, Red river gorge, Hueco, RMNP, Rumney...

I'd be really grateful for any feedback/information anybody has. Thanks

There are quite a few threads in this very sub-forum already covering many of the areas you are asking about.

They'd make a good starting point, if there is anything more specific you want to ask then you'll have to be more explicit.
