Surf Trip Portugal
January 30, 2010, 08:34:55 pm
Am hoping to head to Portugal at mid/end of February for a surf trip, perhaps a bit of bouldering? Nothing booked yet though.

Does anyone have any gen on places to stay, car hire that won't break the bank? Is it necessary to hire a car?

Cheers,

Gruff

Never been, and know little more than what is in Stormriders. Will get hold of HK Stuey's brother and put him onto you, as he has done a surf / climb holiday there.

http://bouldersintra.wordpress.com/info/ might be of use though.

I went to Peniche for a fortnight, surfing, which was great and pretty quiet, although we went off season which might make a difference, also it's miles from the airport and you definitely need a car.  It did have a good cheap campsite and decent surf though, I think there is a surf school of some sort too, which might be worth checking out.

Actually, here is the surf camp place:  http://www.penichesurfcamp.com/

Peniche seems to feature highly as a good spot, you can access coasts with two different aspects based on swell / wind direction. Surf camps are a good choice if you want to avoid car hire. Off season you should be able to get your own place to stay for buttons though. Or do some time with the surf camp and then hire a car for a couple of days from the airport and bouder for a bit before you head for home?

it's been a while since I've been, but the algarve is great, as Chris says you can generally find a reasonable sized waves as you have a choice of coasts. We hired a car and camped, there seemed to be plenty of free camping at remote beaches. Great port too

Nice one. Better get in the pool and start doing lengths, and pop-up drills and press ups, esp if not used to surfing every day, or else you will be a broken man by day 3.

Call me sceptical if you will, but since 30% of your posts feature a link to that site and you've previously said it's your web page, you should really be more sure about where 'they' are based, should you not?  :-\

No need for the sarcastic remarks dude, i am dyslexic , and just doing my own thing which lots of people enjoy.  if you dont like my web page or what i do , its just a matter of choice. I dont get in this world why you need to be so sarcastic, but hey, suppose that says more about me than it does about you. enjoy your holiday

I happen to know geezer, he is a very down to earth guy, I know for a fact if any of you guys were out his way he would bend over backwards to take you guys to the best surfing and climbing area, regardless of if he owns a web site or not.

Hi Gruff, don't know of any climbing in Monchique. You can find little bits but not worth looking. If your in Sagres go to Beliche beach, couple of caves that are good for bouldering and the beach works the same as Arrifana, protected from the wind!
You could also go to Zavial, from the beach looking out to sea on the left hand side up the grass hill there is a over hanging ledge with some good bouldering to be had, also a good surf beach if the left point is going off. There are topos in a bar called DROMADARIO in Sagres that covers the sea cliffs and the bouldering, just ask girl at the bar. When the swells this big the south coast works well, check all the beaches cos there are lots of secret spot ??but you have to look????... Hope this helps.

Hi Gruff,
Yes crowds are a problem here now for surfing? last couple of years i just seem to focus on the climbing as there are not many climbers here and i have it to my self!! Have a couple of secret spots that i can surf on my own (WHEN THEY WORK) so that does me and this year they have been good.
Accommodation: to be honest you would be better off staying where you are now for surf and climbing,no good rock here and Arrifana gets packed these days with beginners throwing boards every time a wave comes????...
If it were me i would stay in Lagos and higher a car. These guys are worth a look:http://www.extremealgarve.com/  i do all there climbing and they have a great surf house but if you want to stay around v,d,t  yes i can sort accom.
How much longer are you here??
