Why Can't I use 1900 x 1080?
January 08, 2010, 07:06:56 pm
Sorry for the sudden flood of technological issues (I'm back!)...

Before going away we bought a new monitor/tv, a samsung T240HD. Its hooked up to the computer with a standard VGA cable. I hadn't really thought anything of it until now but its currently set at 1152 x 864 which is far from 1900 x 1080. I've got the option in the display settings to push that up as far as 2048 x 1536 but when I put it up above a certain amount I have to start scrolling around.

As I'm looking at a new tower anyway, will this problem likely be fixed by using a HDMI or DVI cable instead?

Is there anything I can do to try and rectify this, I've tried gettig my EDID data but it seems to be reading the details from the last monitor driver in the registry and not the current one (despite me disabling the previous one).

I've found a few worrying links that suggest that some of the T240HDs were shipped with the 22" firmware and not the 24" and hence it simply won't work. I really hope this isn't the case as taking 6 months to realise that fact isn't ideal for a speedy return.

Without further hardware specs its hard to given an accurate "diagnosis", but your current limiting factor may be the graphics card in your computer (/laptop) which doesn't support resolutions higher than you are currently getting.

No idea if HDMI resolves this, but if you're building a new box/media centre then ensure that the maximum output resolution matches (at the very least) the capabilities of the monitor/TV.

For example, I've an old (~7yrs) Dell Lattitude X300 that I can plug into a 32" TV which supports a huge amount of real estate (can't remember exactly without checking), but anyway, plug it in (via VGA) and I can only go to 1024x678 because thats the limitation of the graphics card.

Sorry slack---line, what you are saying is wrong. He says he can bump the res up to 2048x1536 on his pc but the screen doesn't show it all. This means the graphics card is capable of higher resolutions but his screen is possibly not.

Paul - I have replied to your PM with more info which may or not be of use.

I think your problems will probably be resolved if you connect via hdmi instead of vga so long as your graphics card has an hdmi output. I think you said it does anyway?

Anyway a hdmi cable can be picked up for £2.50 so what have you got to lose?

Sorry had a few  :beer2: , not the first time I've been wrong, and as I predicted not the last (if only I could apply such foresight to the lottery).

Current box only has VGA, but my folks box will be arriving soon with HDMI and I can check with that.

From what I've read on other forums it LOOKS like samsung shipped the 240HD with the wrong firmware so it thinks its a 22" monitor and can't support resolutions above ~ 1600 x something.... Toss

I'll do battle with Richer Sounds tomorrow and see where it gets me. Nowhere I suspect.

Richer Sounds tend to have quite good customer service in my experience. The screen should be able to do at least its native res

Yup, no fuss. Its going back to Samsung and I even get a stand in whilst mines away.
I'm just worried that it'll get sent back without any change but I'll have to wait and see. It seems pretty cr*p that manufacturers do things like this.
