dual pad carrying
December 15, 2009, 09:42:17 am
i have just got my phud and woomf pads delivered and i am desperate to go out and climb.

while planning my little outing i just wondering if anyone has an easy way to carry both  pads on your back at the same time?

oh and if possible a rucksack aswell?

ha ha, that might be pushing it a bit but i really hate carrying things in my hands.

any help appreciated.

Ricksack on back, one pad over each shoulder.

Either that or get some bitch* to carry things for you.

Oh, and you're lucky you don't have to carry a rack & ropes up to the crag, sounds as though it would kill you  ;)

yup, rack and ropes would kill me.

the reason i'm asking what you probably seem to be a very stupid question is it is several miles walk to where i am intending to climb and a pad over each shoulder for that distance will drive me mad  as thry will constantly be falling off.

i think i will experiment with my them and see what works best.

There's a way to do it but I can't think of how to explain it.  What kind of straps do the pads have, ones like on a rucksack or a single big strap for putting over your shoulder?

rucksack straps.

the pads also have that loop thing that you can put on hooks, i was thinking about attaching one to the other with a biner through that.

i think a bit of trial and error may be needed.

Set one pad up with rucsac style straps and the other as shoulder strap.  Loop the shoulder strap over the top of the other pad and crank it up tight.   Either wear your rucsac on your chest, buy a messenger style bag or stuff all your gear inside the pads and away you go.  You'll look like a sherpa and many people will comment as such but in the absence of having friends it's your best bet.

In that case its simple, one pad on your back with the other clamped inside and your rucksack on your front.

I think it might be easier with one rusksack and one big loop, basically put one pad on your back like a rucksack, then flip the other apd over the top of it, so the strap of the second pad is around the top of the first pad you have on your back?  Does that make sense?  Probably not.  It does work though, then you just wear your rucksack on your front.  I feel like I need to draw you a picture to help explain what I mean.

I carry two pads by having the slightly smaller one attached to the back of the larger one with a webbing strap running round them both to hold them together.  I got the strap from Halfords (sold as a roof rack strap I think) or somewhere similar but basically its just a long tape with a metal buckle that allows the strap to be pulled tight.  Obviously its a bit heavy hoisting the two pads onto my back but otherwise very easy to carry them both strapped together as one.

Here, the strap is like this...

Yeah, I used to do this til I got the webbing strap.  Worked pretty well but strapping them together keeps the second pad from getting stuck in bushes/gates/livestock etc...

I'm another advocate of one pad with rucksack straps, and the other attached to the top with the single shoulder strap. Rucksack (only a thin one) goes inside the pad with rucksack straps.

This is the correct answer. Done it many times.
