I have a question for anyone working in computers as my knowledge is limited on the subject.
My bank is encouraging me to install Rapport to be safe when using my Business internet banking.

Is this overprotective crap or a good idea?

Thank you in advance for any advice provided.

what the fuck is rapport?

thing is, if you dont follow whatever they wnt you to do then you wont be able to use the service ultimately, so you'll probably have to do it in the end...

Tsk tsk, here, let me  :google: that for you  :)

Yeah, this pisses me right off too (I posted a rant up about the stupid fucking card readers).

And what a fucking surprise, there's no Linux variant.

This explains how it works

Just seems to secure your cache (stored web-pages) and set up some static domain name mapping so you can't have your DNS fooled into sending you to fraudulent websites (which I can do by simply adding the IP address and the associated domain name to the text file /etc/hosts!).

We can do that in Windows too you know :)

I wonder where they got the idea from?

Anyway, its nothing revolutionary, and I bet the banks are paying a fortune (the gullible twats that they are).

Pun intentional?

Unfortunately not, still stuck in literal mode from having done too many Linux installs recently.

Well, you need to find out what the IP address of your bank is, so open a DOS prompt and type...

ping [URL of you banks domain]

which will be something like ibank.barclays.co.uk or www.smile.co.uk

the output will then tell you how this Doman Name translates to an IP address.

How you then add this mapping under windows is something you'd have to Google I'm afraid as I've no idea what file you put it in (or more likely GUI you use to add it).

The problem is that the bank will likely have a host of servers doing their web-pages and this may change on each visit, so its more complex (and thats probably why they're trying to push Rapport on you).

Guess what my secure solution would be?  :)
