new netbook!
July 09, 2009, 03:54:40 pm
I've just ordered myself an acer aspire one (1gb ram, 120gb HDD) for £149.99. I'm quite excited about it too. I've already downloaded the windows 7 release candidate so will let you know how the install goes once the machine arrives.

Nce one.
Just be careful, I had one recently and when I was installing an OS it burst into flames, and my house burned down.

Let us know how you get on though.

If it was Paul it would be - the house burned down, flooded, then disappeared into a black hole.

Thinking of getting something similar for use in van, Is this one of the better ones to go for. Only current criteria for choosing one is it must be small enough to fit in the safe.

Got one of those the other week for the same price.  Ditched the Linpus (bastardised Fedora) install and rather than forking out for Windows 7 (which whilst its free for the release candidate isn't the finished version, may have bugs, may well be time limited, and you'll likely have to purchase it at some point in the future) I installed Eeebuntu which was a piece of piss before selling it on to my neighbour (for zero profit, had planned to make some pennies by flogging it on fleabay, my mate owes me a few beers now though).

We plugged it into his 46" TV last night and it worked fine, wireless, webcam and everything else I've tested so far work fine too.

Keyboard is a little small for me and would piss me off if it were my only computer (but its not as bad as using the phone number pad when I've ssh'd in remotely to my computer!).

Good one GCW! Made me smile that did.

The windows 7 release cadidate has a 1 year time limit on it. So it's not something I'll have to think about for a while.

Seeing as you can boot from a USB HDD, I might have a couple of drives with various OSs on to have a play with. I'm quite interested in having a go on eebuntu or UNR or even chrome.

I've already ordered a replacement for the athos wireless card and the web is awash with tales of woe about it.

I've plumped for the INTEL WIRELESS 4965AGN 802.11N 300mbps MINI PCI-E BN, which from what I've gleaned, is a 30 minute job to replace

Windows 7 went on flawlessly. No problems at all.

Frankly, I'm amazed. I've not replaced the network card yet, but to be honest, I've not yet had any problems.

One thing I can report about the aspire one, is that it struggles to play HD video. Standard def is fine though.

I'm about to make a new purchase, I think I'm plugging for the NC10 for £284 from pixmania
although I'm very tempted to get a eee pc 1000he for £10 more although its in white but has got the newer cpu and longer battery life.
Any thing else to consider before I make my purchase?
