or Sony Vegas (pro or not)

There's lots of functionality but you don't NEED to use it and it doesn't get in the way either.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum is the simplified version of Vegas Pro and costs a reasonable amount if you're into actually paying people for their hard work.

Are there any decent free ones to download? An equivalent to GIMP? Doesn't need to be too fancy.

Got Microsoft Movie Maker, but it doesn't like MPEG 4 clips, and I am trying to put together a small film using some .AVI and MPEG 4s thanks.

Are the mpeg4's from your Sanyo Xacti? If so Windows Movie Maker 2011 should be fine (or at least it is with my Xacti) and is free to download. However I think you need to be packing Vista or Win7. Also it's still essentially Windows Movie Maker so Speilberg don't need to start shitting his pants.

doesn't really come under truly 'free' though does it? Its either paid for or obtained by other means.

Pinnacle do a free version of their Pinnacle Studio package called Spin. I've tried to use it in the past but found I've become too used to vegas to be bothered to learn another software. Looks good and fits the bill of being free and not evil MS

If anyone uses it let me know what you think

I might give that a whirl. Currently tring to install service packs and platform updates before I can get MM 11 to run. The will to live is slowly ebbing away.

I am inpet and naive regarding video editing - and use windows MM... but my eyes were opened to its shitness when I got an Ifern4 and found out that imovie (for the ifern) was better and rendered the final HD product in c..10% of the time it took windowsMM.. which made me think it must be cack.
I still use it though.. Let me know how you get on with spin... id be interested
