Moon Bouldering Bag
October 18, 2008, 03:45:53 pm
Has anyone used one of these and do you rate it? Is it big enough? I need a day sack and will probably go for conventional rucksack around 35 litres but wondering if people use these shoulder style bags now instead.

it would increase the teams cool factor significantly but i'm not sure how much wine and camembert you can fit in one though?

Only just. Depends how bulky the duvet is!

No (sorry Adam). I've got one and it's great, but if you want to lug all that kit about you're going to need something closer to your initial volume than the Moon bag (~ 20-25 litres?).
Shoulder bags are the way forward though - Chrome do bigger courier type bags, or Bagaboo for the individual touch.

The Postie bag I got off Monkeyboy is definitely the best crag bag I've had. Fits a lot in and is fairly light as well as being a good combo with an over the shoulder pad like a satellite. I prefer a small 15ltr bag to wear on my chest when carrying a large backpack style mat though.

I've been using one of these http://www.snowandrock.com/SearchResult/Travel/Packs+Luggage/Travel+Bags/Base+Camp+Messeng+L+TNF0384.htm

It's ok and more or less fits the stuff you want to carry.  Also its got a zip to stop falling out and its waterproof.

The only downside is that its a bit pricey.

Since you're on the topic of bouldering bags, I'd like to introduce you to Dolomite Climbing Bags.  We're a brand new company based in Atlanta, GA and make customized, durable, hand-sewn (I sew them myself and have been sewing for about 15 years), quality bags.  The difference between our bag and most other bouldering bags that I've seen is that we have external pockets to compartmentalize your gear.  We have two different models, Basic which runs for $55 and Deluxe for $80.  Both models can be carried by hand, on shoulder, or lain flat to fit inside a crash pad.  Here's the run down:

Basic Key Points:
20" x 30"
Two shoe pockets
Water bottle pocket
Chalk bag pocket
Two zipper pockets that extend the entire length of the bag (size)
Interior cell phone pocket and key holder
Handle and removable shoulder strap for carrying

Deluxe Key Points:
All items listed under Basic Key Points
Two outer loops allow you to hang anything to the outside of the bag with a biner
Bias tape along pocket tops and around the bag add a crisp finished look
Velcro® closures on water bottle pocket and chalk bag pocket
Expandable zipper pocket fits climbing harness or cold-weather clothes

I often use this bag for carrying around school books, laptop, all climbing gear (including harness), and accessories with enough room.

Check us out at www.DolomiteClimbingBags.com or on facebook.  The website is a work-in-progress but every dream starts somewhere.

See you around the crag,

Candice & Josh

I am uncomfortable with the idea of compartmentalizing my gear. Would it be possible to sew a bag which would be more suitable for pigeonholing my gear instead?
Instead of zips and pockets could I have stereotypes and generalizations sewn onto the outside?

I had a nice sesh at birchens tonight, and was glad to just open my POD Escape pod rucksack, and chuck every fucking thing inside the gaping big hole it had. Little panic when I had to redirect my mind bizniz into the internal pocket, but the house keys were safe.

And last time I used a pad; I put my 30l sac, and fuckloads of other shit, inside it, and had no problem. Who needs a 'bouldering bag'?

Save the money blud, they don't even look good.

i'm very sorry...

Cool, now that you've said sorry, as far as I'm concerned you can post as a normal boulderer and we can make amusing references to this little bit of spamming whenever people are discussing bouldering bags in the future - with no need to delete it (probably)

Given the modest budget managed by Bubba, I think it would cost you next to Fuck All* to post up an advert in the relevant section of the forum. The moral highground gained by supporting the site could be quite intoxicating

* for up to date information on the current value of Fuck All, see the back pages of The Financial Times or Wall Street Journal.

I don't use bouldering bags, I just use my rucksack.  Partly because I've always got teh camcorder and tripod.
And partly 'cos it seems I'd have to get a tan and a wifebeater top

well i've got 2 bouldering bags and funnily enough 2 wife beaters however thankfully they rarely see the light of day being cycling under tops. given one is a fetching string number this understandable .on a similar note my moon bouldering bag has never been near a boulder.
