venues close to S.Manchester
October 10, 2008, 10:33:18 am
Hello,
I find myself at the fairer halfs house in Didsbury, twiddling my thumbs whilst she's at work, and the weather looks great... Got my mat & boots in the car, but dont know this area at all (bouldering wise) as my usual haunts are in Yorkshire - over Leeds way. Anyone got any suggestions - its windy, so somewhere sheltered probably better? Within about 45min - hour drive and would appreciate some local knowledge if anyone can help?
Muchos thanks in advance,
TT

i'm in didsbury too, best (closest) options are hobson moor (20 minutes if you're not in rush hour) for the traverse and loads of eliminates (some mentioned on a thread a few years back), wimberry slightly further (40 min or so).

new mills tors if its wet, stockport wall/broughton if its really wet.

running hill pits is good if it's sunny and dry but generally more highball routes than pure bouldering.

if the traffic works for you its only an hour or so to stoney, rubicon etc, and theres loads of esoteric stuff round buxton, can buy the local bouldering guide in the climbin shop there.

also just over an hour to bridestones widdop etc.

it probably is, but getting a bit too close to liverpool for my liking.

blackstones edge is also an hour and really good for an exploratory sunny day out.

if time is of the essence then its hobson moor all the way

Excellent, found it.. any places best to park etc.. or is it fairly self explanatory?
Heading off in about an hour if you want a lift?

Definitely, I would recon less than 45 minutes outside rush hour.  Craig y Longridge should be about 50 mins (takes me 40/45 from Sale).

And of course Broughton wall is only 20 minutes away!

They have a a guard looking after the carpark and it is fenced off from the street so its fairly secure these days.

Hello,
Thanks very much for the tip Andyh
Just got back from Hobson moor.. Great traverse there.. is/should it be from L-R? (how I did it) - found the last set of moves hard and quite sequency, took me about an hour to get it all figured out, good stuff - ideal for a quick fix  :)  Was the only person there until an outdoor pursuits type outfit rolled up with 5 or 6 'youths' monkeying about...

Been to the Stockport wall a couple of times (Awesome walls is it?) on Sunday afternoons when the fairer half pushes me out of the door so she can hoover/iron/clean/work in peace for a couple of hours.. Some nice problems, and I like the way its set as a colour for 4 or 5 groups of grades - so you just do circuits. I guess if I went there often enough it could get a bit limited, but for my every other week dabble its a great place.

Cheers,
T

either way, all down to personal preference, L-R for me.

loads of good elimates on the sidewalls for next time you're there.

think awesome walls are changing the probs again next week

Yup - that looked like the best line (easiest to hardest). Last move was the toughy for me - took me a while to work out there was a really nice cross through that worked a treat :-)

good to see some hobby moor/broughton fans on here.
stockport wall was reset today I think by big pick.
MCC is tres expensive and not very good.
rochdale wall is quite good but none of them are a patch on the mighty broughton.
Frodsham is close to s. manc. brownstones and also woodhouse scar are not too far either

I would have mentioned Brownstones, but it's an acquired taste.  Nik at work loves it, others aren't so keen.  Each to their own I guess.

If I had to fuck a climbing wall it'd be Broughton. Wimberry was in good nick today, the rotting sheep's carcass near the sloping top has decayed enough that it doesn't smell like a donner kebab factory there anymore. Word.

I used to think Hobson moor was shite apart from the traverse but last time I went a pal showed me some pretty sweet eliminates and a few cool independent probs. Also if you turn up at Hobby moor and the heavens open roll on down to Glossop Leisure Centre Wall, like Broughton but sharper holds smaller pads.
