Kinder Scout Bouldering
September 20, 2007, 10:21:24 pm
I know that the woolpacks have been climbed on for years and are sensitive for their delecate nature of soft patina (grit skin) - but check out these slabs on the Northern edge - the sheep provide the scale - they look awesome!

As part of the guide team I'm happy to go & dangle on a peice o' string - but surley these beauties are worth a pad session???

I have been having a wee play up on Kinder recently. Where are these exactly boulders in the pic exactly?

Anyone got any idea of what bouldering has been documented up there? I seem to remember some sort of online topo but can't find it. Have done a few things recently but no doubt its all been done before. Didn't find the problems on the Woolpacks that great to be honest, awesome rounded boulders but mainly lowball. Western grit claims its the best boulder field in the peak and would be popular if nearer the road but I couldn't find any problems I would say are worth going back for. Maybe not looking hard enough? Still beats fighting through the deluge at Burbage South boulders!

I agree about woolpacks - would make a shit bouldering area, and i would vigerously discourage anyone from climbing there on the basis of risk of just ruining all the rock shapes. theres bouldering on bleaklow that is far far superior to the woolpacks in every way, and much better rock.

Yeah I agree - I wouldn't recommend climbing there, it would be criminal to damage those beauties and looking at old UKC threads gives an indication that it wouldn't take much for someone to head up there with a wire brush and scrub everything down to powder. Mr Long has a good photo on his UKC gallery of the best problem I found. I might go and have a play at Bleaklow then, ta Dave.

The best stuff on Bleaklow is at the Grinah stones - check the dark peak map out for directions. Then there are the Barrow Stones - fairly similar to the woolpacks - but better rock in places. Finally - Roundhill is somewhere I've checked out - but not climbed there - but looks good!

BTW the Kinder Slabs in my OP are on the Northern Edge - Ashop. They look good - but I may suspect that they are a tad scrittly!

Maybe time for another recce!

Cheers

Stick to Bleaklow for bouldering.
