Dead Shoes
September 18, 2007, 12:50:20 pm
Probably obvious but I was curious to know if anyone knew otherwise . .

I've a couple of old pairs of Katanas that are completely ragged (both re-soled twice) one pair has now lost the upper velcro and a heal has fallen off and the other pair have gay-ping (sp) holes on the toes which repair well enough but tend to come off too quick to be worth it again. Soles on both have fairly untouched 5-10 rubber on them and so can still edge in them a bit.

Long story short do I bin them or is there some way of recycling them / parts of them. One pair's so comfy now I've occasionally worn them as slippers round the house (lardy da) so consequently have a lot of sentimental value.

Any ideas?

can you not just wear them for indoor climbing (i.e. where it doesn't matter), save your best boots for outdoors? You can make your brand new expensive boots last a lot longer this way. and if you're indoor boots are shit, its better training value cos everything feels harder....

Good advice, they've both been religated to indoors for some time now but one pair (the toeless ones are well past even that).

What's best done with them? Bin after salvaging better bits of the sole.

Complete longshot but I thought the big companies may have taken the shoes back to salvage parts given that unless your tradding a lot in boots they only wear in a few places.

you seem so infatuated with them, why not consider Taxidermy?

A few of the supermarkets have shoe recycling banks.  Dunno if it applies to rancid smelling rock boots.

second the recommendation for using kaput shoes for indoors (or warming-up outdoors) - I have a pair of Katanas with no rubber within 1 cm of their tips that do fine for the purpose (except when I accidently take them to old-skool textured walls where you have to smear... then it gets painful).

Anyway to my main reason for logging on... a public service announcement:

planetfear have a 1/2 price sale on Sportivas: Barracudas, Katanas, Miuras, Venoms etc   ;D

... some are even in sensible sizes - just bought myself a pair of size 42.5 Venoms for £35.... unfortunately they'll have to be kept in cryogenic suspension until I wear out the Scarpa Boosters I bought 2 days ago to replace mycurrent Venoms... my brilliant timing as always!

That was considered. Just need to find a human model . .

How so? I recon the friction between soggy peat and old lasers would be rubbish

Old shoes are a definite requirement though, ideally old enough that you can abandon them should the need arise - not unlikely on a number of counts.

:off: I know but with the demise of Planet Fear it seems they are still offloading a load of shoes at bargain prices. Only wank sizes left in most but Boreal Mutants in my size. Are these worth £40 (just as a spare pair) or are they so toss as to not be worth bothering with? Plus any idea what the sizings are like in comparison to Scarpa Stix / Boosters? Any advice appreciated....

Cheers Paul, thought I'd heard something bad about em. Was only thinking of something for training in really but come to think of it I've probably got a few pairs of 15 year old barely used Arsolos knocking about in the attic which will do just as good a job and not cost me a penny....... :)
