Sport climbing gear on flights
August 06, 2007, 11:04:53 am
Alright, just canvassing for a bit of knowledge here regarding baggage allowances, flight security and stuff.

I'm off to Sardinia for a bit of bolt clipping action in Sept - there are two of us going on an Easyjet flight, and we're planning to do the following:

One person - ropebag with rope and shoes on plane as hand luggage, and sleeping bags / clothes / normal stuff in hold luggage
Other person - tent on plane as hand luggage, harnesses and quickdraws / stove / pots as hold luggage

I think this would be OK weight-wise, was just nervous about over-zealous airport security taking exception to my bringing a rope on as hand luggage. Anyone got any experience on anything like this happening when flying?

Cheers in advance all...

A friend of mine was forced to put his rope in the hold on a flight to Norway a year or so ago.  Given that paranoia levels are at an all time high you may have problems with this aspect.

Also thinking about it you may have pegs with your tent which could cause problems as well, so it may be best to put those in the hold.

I'd second Slack-line on both of those comments. I've never had a problem with a rope in the hand luggage but have heard of more and more instances of people getting turned down and having to put it in the hold.

For the tent, I'd say poles and pegs will have to go in the hold.

I have heard of people getting told to ditch ropes too. I also think tent poles as well as pegs might not go down too well.

Not worth the risk IMO. Better to run the risk of baggage charges than arrive with no climbing kit. Better to get compression sac / straps for sleeping bag and cram it in hand luggage than risk any metalware / ropes.
