The Northeast pet!
August 30, 2006, 11:41:43 pm
OK.

I'm heading over to the Northeast next week for (a weather permitting) 3 days of bouldering. Gonna call in at Queens crag as I'm going there tommorrow and will no doubt have to go back and try something upon which I failed. However, where the devil shall I concentrate the rest of my efforts?

Bearing in mind we have to cater for fair to middling Golt and possibly 2 (definitely 1) strang buggers  :-\

I'm thinking of Kyloe. Any advice wise folks?

id say bowden and kyloe in...
Bowden has some nice ones in the middle grade and some really classic harder ones, where as i think kyloe goes more towards the strang end of the scale (with a smidgen of massochism for pulling on some of the sharper crimps). Dont exactly know what you mean by middling but do a search on here, all of the classics have been listed. Cave routes, captain haddock, y front, and its ramp to name but a few.
Make sure if you do go up to kyloe you have the skin to make the journey worthwile...
oh and do wordline at queens, its really good.

Good knowledge Paul, cheers

A middling me can manage top end V6/7 on a good day. Which seems to be most days at present, putting it down to drinking cider less!!!
I know Worldline is pretty tough but I was eyeing it last visit and it will be something to work I guess. Kyloe is defo a strong contender, been hammering the Bowderstone relentlessly to toughten the old digits in preparation. Gonna take the new digital with me so hoping for some snapshots.

Hmmm dont think the nice polished holds of the stone will prepare you for those crimps....

When are you up there, im visiting family at the minute and might be heading up for a days bouldering sometime although not sure how long sorting through various van parts will take me.

Wordline is all about the right heel, get it on the good bit and your done. Plenty to go at all round at that grade, cave routes are good at bowden, jocks and geordies at kyloe and monty python's...

Golt, where are you basing yourself?  I think it's a bit of a haul from Queens to Kyloe (I'm assuming you mean "in" not "out").

Shaftoe is a lot closer, if you fancy some of that.

Aren't pigeons the North East pet of choice?

My Uncle Barry kept pigeons up the top of Blaydon bank.  ;D

seriosly GOLT dont bother with shaftoe, if you're going to queens, kyloe in, and bowden it will be such a let down.
If going from queens to bowden/kyloe it is a bit of a slog, go back towards newc then north rather than cross countrying it, we found this out the hard way using james' sat nav, it took us on anything vaguely resembling a road until finally we came across this:

thats right, a felled tree and a ditch not far of the verge..the joys of Tom Tom go. After a bit of shoving and off roading we did it with about an inch to spare.

you wanna check out kyloe-in and back bowden. Front bowden is nice to look at but ultimatley the bouldering dissapoints. the rock quality is better at back bowden.

Cool stuff.

Unlucky with the fallen tree/duff sat nav dudes!!! I tend to follow my nose a bit more, was thinking of gettin a tom tom but have heard a lot of bad reports.

The plan is to go to Queens on Monday, straight from home then have a day there and head off to where we're stopping. Based in Gateshead I think so gonna quest from there. I think Kyloe In is a must.

Both the Bowdens are tip top and so are both the Kyloes, although 'out' only has about half a dozen good problems (including two large roof problems). If it's damp do the County a favour and avoid Bowden as it trashes quickly when moist.... see the footholds on Vienna for evidence

Weather......

BOLLOCKS!!!!

Got there yesterday bout half 3. It was mint, warm a touch, dry and looking good. Had a few beers last night and was keen as.

Then woke up at half 7 for the early start, and it was pissing it down.

Nuff said.

Ended up in Kesick wall after coming home, only to find out the rain had stopped and life was dry in Newcastle.
