Time Off
September 24, 2004, 02:00:43 pm
I was out a for a walk earlier mulling a few things over, and I realised quite an astonishing thing.

Basically in November I will have been a "climber" for 7 years. Also at about that time, if my rehab goes to plan I will hopefully be easing back into climbing. Even assuming this comes true, in November I will officially go the wrong side of the "50%" threshold. That is, for the 7 years since I started climbing I will have spent just over 3 and a half years off injured, not climbing at all!   Given that a large proportion of the other 3.5 years when I was actually going climbing has been spent 'easing back into it' after injury, I regard it as a minor miracle that I ever got up anything.

Anyone beat that? Time off through choice doesn't count!

i've been climbing for 32 years  i sorter stopped when i moved over to e yorks as the nearest rock is 40 miles away and in them days i did'nt drive. i had several short come backs before getting serious about 15 years ago after 6 years i fucked my neck/shoulder and had 6 years off.i've been serious again for 3 years.

 :oldgit:

is this a worth while use of one's existance.

well, i might just happen to be you ! except i think i've only been climbing about 6 and a half years, but yeah similar 3 years offf approx due to injury i would guess...  though i would suggest i now get fewer injurys than when i first began, but hten that could be due to having more technique, doing more ahem routes or just my body just getting used to the rigours of clinging to small bits of rock...
How's the shoulder nige?

I'm injured all the time but never take any time off. I wonder if these two facts are related :?

Operated on! It was still really fucked after 4 months off, so I went under the knife last week to have the broken bits reattached. Hopefully ease back in to climbing at the end of November/start of December, with any luck I'll be back to where I was when I did it (May this year) by May next year. Talk about running to stay still!    How'd you know it were me shoulder anyway? Did I know you in a previous life?

been climbing 12 years and the longest i've had off was 6 weeks whilst back packing round eastern europe (woman in tow, hence lack of climbing).

other than that i've never gone more than 2 weeks without atleast hitting the wall

I've been climbing for 4 years now, and I reckon I take, on average, 2 to 3 months a year off (between injury and other things).

Last year I was off for about 6 or 7 months, but this year I've managed to stay pretty injury free (knock on wood).
