Cheap pad - Climb X vs Grivel vs Alpkit
September 16, 2014, 01:19:58 pm
Hi All,

Need to buy a (cheapish) pad for my outside wall – ideally around 100 quid. Doesn’t need to be super light, just needs to be robust. I’ve narrowed it down to the Climb X for 90 quid, Grivel Crash Pad also £90 ish and the alp kit Mujo.

Essentially I think I probably want the climb x as I’ve heard the foam is hardish (which is good I assume?) and it weighs the most (which I assume means it’s got the most foam?). But then the Grivel looks ok (but suspiciously light) and someone I know likes Alpkit (seems thin tho).

Has anyone got any experience of the Climb X and can verify it’s not a pile of cack? Needs to be a folding one rather than a taco, but beyond that I’ve not a clue! Route climber!

Cheers

Grivels are shit from what I hear. Alpkit ok. Considered snap calzone? £100 from some places ATM.

Quite a few fans of Pod mats on here. http://www.podsacs.com/i/q/CCPODCP/pod-crash-pad
Not quite as cheap as they have been but still not bad.

Ah the calzone is a taco - don't have any where to store flat. Also a bit small I think as is the pod one?

I borrowed a mates boss Hogg and don't think I want to go smaller than that.

Has anyone tried the climb x one?

I wouldnt worry about the storing them flat stuff... my 6yr Calzone is always stored folded up and is fine! It is 1m by 1m though and the Alpkit ones are a bit larger..

Pod ones are 'OK' but I got one in the £100 offer and probably wouldnt pay full price for one...

Problem is - the expensive bit in a mat is the foam.. and with some exceptions you get what you pay for....

But I've never heard of it before!! 6 good reviews though - not sure whether thats enough/means anything... anyone else ever heard of them/used one?

My Grivel one gets taken everywhere because it's light and despite my arthritic knees, was good enough for five days in Font on my own. Holding up well so far but I'm sure there's better for the money. I left the Snap Bun in the van, mostly do when I'm on my own.

I've just bought a Mujo which seems good so far. Had looked at the Climb-X, the foam seemed really good in the shop but was chatting to someone who has one the other week and his had gone really soft. I got the impression it hadn't seen a massive amount of use.

Mujo is £130 yes? If thats in your price range have a look at the Ocun Paddy Sundance (£125) - despite the odd name Ocun make superb mats... (and it can be made into one long narrow pad for traverses etc..) same(ish) dimensions as the Alpkit Mujo (both have 9cm foam - which I think is a little on the thin side for a solo pad..)

Anybody got any more info on ClimbX pads?

I'm about to have a pad clearout from the basement if you are interested...

(1) Ocun Dominator. The foam and case are in great condition but.. the loop that the backpack straps go through has partly ripped off the back (anyone good at stitching could fix it easily I suspect..). £75.. (it really is a good pad with one fault.. £190 quid new...)

(2) Snap Bun (in black) - same issue with the strap as the Ocun - I re-foamed it a couple of years back and its good good stiff foam, just that its been sat not being used in the cellar for a while. Case more worn (small holes in corners etc..) £40..

Haven't used any of the pads mentioned but I've had a good look at the foam in the Climb x and Grivel pads in the shop. Would never consider the Climb X personally, foam looks rubbish. When I've seen them at the crag they look pretty soft. Grivel look better.

Better would be something like the Paddy Kava, Ocun make good pads

Or the touchdown, though it's a bit smaller (I have one, great foam).

Hi TT, would you take an offer on the Ocun? It goes sideways doesn't it i.e. 2m x66cm? I'd want it for a board I'm building. South Mancs, you could have a go on the board if I ever get it built....

Sure - I can bring it over some time if you like.. not back until Tuesday afternoon and the in laws are visiting Tues > Fri, but sure I can find the time. Maybe DM me and we can figure something out? Whereabouts are you?
