Jaizkibel, Basque Country
August 10, 2015, 02:33:45 pm
It appears that I'm off to Hendaye surfing with my children next week.

A cursory search shows that there are loads of sandstone boulders just over the border in Spain at Jaizkibel. It looks really good on the photos and bits of topo that I've seen (nice height, lots of sectors, lots of mid-range problems). I've also realised that BasqueMTB are based right next door too - for some reason I thought that they were up in the hills.

But I can't get an idea of how spread out the sectors are. Some photos and maps make them look really far apart, and with only one parking spot in the middle.

Has anyone been there? I'd be looking to visit for an afternoon or two rather than a full day mission, so it's only going to be pratical if the walk-in to a couple of good sectors is just a few minutes, and if there are a good handful of easier problems (4s) anywhere to amuse the kids.

Thanks.

Doug at BasqueMTB (tell him Chris says hi ;) ) knows everyone local who is into any kind of outdoor sports, he should be able to put you in touch with someone with the knowledge.

Thanks Chris, I did think of him (I've seen his helpful posts over on STW), but I thought I'd ask here first, what with it being a bouldering forum and all...

<narrows eyes, stares suspiciously at all the well-travelled forum members lurking in the background>

I'll drop him a line.

Mini-update.

Didn't go bouldering in the end (and didn't contact Doug due to running out of time!), but we did go up to the top of Jaizkibel. It's not obvious from the maps, but the road goes right along the top of the hill and all the promising rocky outcrops are down towards the sea... quite a long way down towards the sea. It's probably great if you know exactly where to go and don't mind an epic uphill slog at the end of the day, but exploring could have lead to family mutiny.

Surfing was good though.
