Amsterdam - what to do?
January 21, 2015, 01:01:47 pm
A week on Saturday I'm heading to Amsterdam for 3 days and need some things to do...

I don't really fancy all the really touristy things so any thoughts on differen/hidden things would be appreciated.

Would be cool to go to some of the Grafitti places, maybe some good party venues (any techno-y places?), or anything that's not going to be mobbed with people. Some cool food places perhaps (my friend visited a squat in Berlin where they cook a big veggie breakfast etc which sounded like an experience).

On an old thread (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php?topic=13149.0) Bubba mentioned a supper club that his sister used to frequent which sounded good as well!

I'm very open to ideas so fire away!

Before you do any of those go to a head shop and get some magic mushrooms.  Mexican cubensis are a good choice, but for a more mellow experience the Philosophers stones would be my recommendation.

Makes all of the above far more "interesting" (although you might find yourself gravitating towards Vondelpark) and you'll see plenty of "different/hidden" things.  ;)

Went to OT301 the other weekend which was really good.  A club with various room in an old artist squat.  They have graffiti as well if I remember correctly.  Also, if you don't mind being naked in front of other people spend an afternoon at Spa Deco after a night out.  It's an amazing place to spend an afternoon!

The Van Gogh museum is brilliant even though it's on the tourist trail.

A friend went in August to a great music festival and bought some truffles from a headshop.  He said they were fantastic and the best psychadelic experience he's had; quite visionary and no paranoia.  He told me to read the instructions about not eating for a few hours beforehand as the initial nausea wasn't pleasant and having a glucose tablet with fish oil caps to hand in case things got a bit much was very handy.

Sounds like the Philosophers Stones I mentioned...

I've always taken magic mushrooms (and generally any drug I'm ingesting) on an empty stomach as it seems to increase the rate of absorption, and in turn the onset of the high, and means if you do feel sick and need to vomit there is less to pass out of the body (nothing worse than   whilst tripping).

not cold enough to ice skate?

http://twistedsifter.com/2012/02/ice-skating-famous-canals-of-amsterdam/

there's also the Sex Museum which amused me as an impressionable teenager, and the tour of the Heineken Factory. Always tons of good DJs, live music, exhibitions going on, worth googling to see if you fancy anything.

The Anne Frank house.

Quite moving.

Otherwise, what Nibbs said.

Seriously, it's one of my favourite cities.

Just walking around and stopping for the odd coffee; staring at the fantastic architecture (always look up) will kill a couple of days.

The Red light district is fascinating and a late evening stroll around there is a surprisingly civilised jaunt.

The Anne Frank house is the ultimate tourist trap and the queues are normally enormous. Similarly, Van Gogh is permanently heaving. However you should do at least one 'cultural' thing whilst there and if you don't want to do either of those, or the Rijksmuseum, then check out Rembrandt's house; small, perfect, and quiet.

That's the plan for later - work doesn't allow it unfortunately.

I also realised it's a 21 hour thing so the Spa would be needed the following morning...

before following any of the above excellent suggestions, hire a bike. And some arm-bands.
