In France, ERDF (sole provider) are scheduled for 95% penetration of smart meters (or something like that) by 2020. The demographic here (Ariege) has a particularly high proportion of hippies, crusties and fans of conspiracy theories so there's some very significant anti-smart meter sentiment and propaganda about. Most of it total unscientific bollocks, naturally. For the same reasons as you, I'm all for them. Some pretty powerful data will be built up in no time (especially when specific devices are signatured to the meter, etc.) and potential integration with home batteries could/will be exciting in terms of how the grid could be be modified (exciting to me anyway.) We get them (no say in it) here in 2018.
Anyway, sorry bit of a tangent there but I reckon if you got one/switched, when you come to sell, a very small percentage of people would be put off by it (assuming it's not a big hippie area) , very small percentage would see it as a bonus and the vast majority wouldn't notice or care either way.
