Hard Rock - Spillikin Ridge in Glendalough?
December 02, 2013, 08:26:40 pm
According to this link http://www.mountain-expertise.co.uk/Hard_Rock_CLimbs.html Spillikin Ridge in Glendo is in Hard Rock, I never knew that. Can anyone tell me if there is there much about the route, any photos?
I'm sure Ken wouldn't mind if someone send me a photo of the relevant page?

I've got the second edition (1985) and it's not in the main list

The list on needle sports website has "to be added to next edition" so I suspect that website sourced their info from there but just got lazy and left out the footnote

"Current being" the 1992 edition?

I'm pretty sure it's not in there, not sure if another edition is planned.

If it was in HR I would have probably had a crack at it when I was there!

Sound intriguing! You don't rest do you :) Shout if you need the usual help!

Also pondering further, If it did make it into a new edition of HR it would be a shame to include a solitary Irish route, considering some of the fantastic routes on the west and north coasts that could go in too.

Thanks Chris, will be in touch, early days yet.

It would be very token to include just one route.

Don't know the details of the Old Man but Spillikin is less than an hour's drive from the ferry port in Dublin with maybe a 45 minute walk on top of that. So 4 hours from Wales?

Depends where from and how you intend to get there. What's the relevance?

They're both "isolated" routes that require a bit of travelling to get there I'd imagine.

Well so are many routes in HR (depending obviously where you are located), not sure why these two were held up for comparison.

Dragon and Gob, the Scoop and S Ridge Direct for example all have relatively difficult access.

I don't know either, that was a guess based on the suggestion that travelling 4hrs to do one "solitary Irish route" would be a shame

If such ventures are standard fare for Hard Rock it wouldn't seem out of place (but would miss some other great climbs in Ireland).

In response to Dave's token gesture comment and being unfamiliar with SR, I was curious whether it was an outlier when compared to other HR routes.  Hoy was the most extreme example I could think of (although maybe it's not) needing hours of driving, two ferries, prebooked taxis and a fair approach walk.  Getting to SR seems a breeze in comparison.

Ok nai makes sense now. It's a 20 min flat walk from car park, then 10 mins uphill. Roadside compared to some Scottish stuff.
