Grammar question
April 25, 2013, 01:36:28 pm
I would like to know if it's wrong to use "which" instead of "who" as a relative pronoun for a person. Is it just more formal?
For example: I know the man who lives there. I know the man which lives there.
The man who lives there is an asshole. The man which lives there is an asshole.
Thanks.

Which is entirely wrong in this instance. Leave that man alone though, that's his house and you can't go in there and call him an asshole.

"Who" is for people. "Which" is for things.

What about when to use

"The man that lives here"

vs

"The man who lives here"

or

"The cat that was on the mat"

vs

"The cat which was on the mat"

The man who lives there is a crusher.

The problem which lives there is crushed.

Does that make more sense??  :2thumbsup:

"Which" vs "that" is dependent upon whether you use a restrictive clause or not.
