Black Rocks Damage
February 15, 2013, 09:05:41 am
Chatting to someone in the pub last night and they said they thought the bouldering block left of railway slab had signs of new damage. Anyone been up there recently to confirm?

Finally got out today and sadly the vandalism turned out to be true. I'll try and post some pics at some stage. It's not extensive and may even have been crude attempts at hold improvement (footholds damaged). Also one hold damaged on Railway Slab.

Also went to Jackson Tor (Matlock Bank Quarry) and happened upon local hero Andy L. He showed us some nice lower grade stuff he'd done on the far left after giving the whole area a good spring clean. Almost T- shirt weather there today and problems and routes are in the best nick I've seen them. If you have never been go take a look.

not wanting to tread on columbo's toes but did the damage look consistent with that done at RHS?

Not really as it seems to be more on obvious foot holds and not places that are always or often chalked. None of it makes sense (then why would we expect sense from nutcases who vandalise rock).

Black Rocks is very popular with non-climbers, so it may well be someone with no idea that what they are doing is damaging and affects other people. A few years back, I was near Angel's Share. To my horror, I heard the "tink tink" of hammer and chisel from around the corner. I rushed round, full of self-righteous anger, only to find 2 small boys and an elderly gent, hammer and chisel in hand. I managed to calm down and explain that chiselling away might not be a good idea becuase of the effect on climbing, and it was totally obvious that such a thing had never occured to them.

V. unlikely... why would they target a chipped hold and just remove the surface?

I'll take your word for it as you've seen the damage and I haven't, just wanted to point out that there may be other clueless people about who mean no harm, who may be chipping stuff. It does seem pretty suspicious though that there appears to have been a sudden spate of it in the Southern Peak.

I came across this damage last week and took some photos.  I haven't been to Cratcliffe/RHS post-chipping so can't comment on any similarities but it seems to be holds reachable from ground level and which would be either an obvious hold or chalked.  The damage on the Trevor slab seemed to be hold removal/destruction rather than improvement.

There was a chipped foothold (one of the ancient chipped scoops) on the Railtrack Slab Route 1

There was a chipped foothold on Trevor

The most obvious damage was the destruction of the (anicient) chipped hold on the arete of Thomas

There was also fresh damage to the starting hold on Golden Days up on the beetle block, on the low starting crack which looked like it had been chalked before the chipping.

I've put some photos up here which I think anyone (not just FB users) can look at:
