The Peak Adventure Sports Alliance
February 14, 2013, 10:22:21 am
Site sponsors The BMC are part of The Peak Adventure Sports Alliance lobby group that has recently been formed.

Jim Dixon, the head of the Peak District National Park welcomes them and looks forward to meeting them to hear what they have to say.

Is the text of the article which includes a comparison with the money to the Opera House (wtf?) written by the BMC or is it a circular from "the Alliance".

In my view the BMC is an effective and powerful lobbying group in its own right and any involvement or endorsement of another lobbying group should be approached with caution.

Who are they, what are their intentions and where's their website ?

No idea, only came across that via the tweet.

It looks like standard text/press release, presumably from the Peak Adventure Sports Alliance, because exactly the same text appears on UKC.  A reduced version is on The Star's site.

Any forum regulars who are members of Ride Sheffield know anything about this?

...best I come clean then  :-[ - yeah me again.  Thanks for posting up Jim Dixon's tweet Slackers, I'd no idea he'd responded in any way yet.  I came up with the idea for PASA after hearing from Henry Folkard that the Peak Park Authority had produced a policy document about outdoor pursuits without feeling it necessary to talk to any of the representative bodies or any of the numerous volunteers with whom they interact on an almost daily basis.  Henry and I chatted and I just thought that there was room for a diverse campaign group drawing support from all the outdoor pursuits.  The aims are pretty much as stated in the press release - stop the PDNPA seeing outdoor pursuits simply as a source of revenue, suggest alternative ways of generating income and campaign vigorously against central govt's woeful underfunding of the National Park.  Now, there's plenty of room for discussion about how the NP's grant is spent, but I think that we can perhaps agree that a National Park that is within spitting distance of a fair proportion of the English population and contributes massively to their health and well being is worth fighting for.  Also, a bit of solidarity between the different sports would be a good idea too as some of the smaller sports already pay to play, not a healthy precedent.  As for the comparison between funding for fat singers and the NP, as far as I can tell, (no promises here), it's correct.

OK, fire away....  :boxing:

...oh, and in reply to Shark, we've not got round to a website yet.  Not sure there's much point until we see what the PDNPA have to say and get a meeting with Jim Dixon under our belts.  It's look a bit silly with just the press release on it....  :sorry:

I've been trawling the web for more authoritative funding figures for the Royal Opera House and the PDNPA.  The former received just over £25m 2012-13 which rises slightly next year then hits £26m the following year.  Meanwhile, the PDNPA has been cut to the bone from £7.8 in 2011-12 to £6.5m two years later.  Hope that clears things up.....
