Val di Mello in a Van
June 28, 2013, 11:42:25 am
Hi Y'all,

Thinking of heading over to Mello in the van in August and wondered what the deal is with just parking up and crashing in places - is it ok/frowned upon/illegal/impossible....?

We'll probably do a bit of time on the campsite there but it'd be nice to just be able to stop, pop the roof, get the kids to sleep and chill without feeling like we're gonna get hasled..

Anyone done this? Have any tips etc?

Also if anyone's knows any ace free van spots that way then please let me know.

Ta,

:D

Don't know about where to stay in a van but would like to jump on the vanwagon and ask about camping sites in the valley.

Which is the best in terms of price and location? The website info is patchy at best. As far as I can work out there are three options. Camping jacks ( cannot find much info using iOS), sasso remenno (expensive) and one other. Can someone please tell me what to do?

I will also be there in early August Duncan and would like to hook up if you are there at the same time. We are with the family too to could be ideal. We have climbed together before on a few occasions. My friends have been there recently in a van so I will nudge them for information

I'd imagine van camping will be difficult given the new regulations on the access road (permit required).

The camping at the base is very expensive if you have a van, I can't remember quite how much but it worked out roughly equal to the cost of the solo granito guide per night for myself, Nat and a van. The others weren't open.

We slept in our van away from Val di Mello on a quiet road but EVERY local car that came past sounded their horn when they went past us.

I'd recommend the Pizza place and enjoying Pizzocheri, wine and coffee at the Luna hut if you get chance. The coffee shop in town is also run by one of the local climbers and is also very nice.

Hi Neil (I'm guessing that's who you are;-) ,

Great stuff - we plan to be out that way from around the 6th if things go to plan so should definitely hook up.

Thank for the info Paul, might be a bit of a pain wild camping there then by the sounds of it which is a bit dissapointing as we're trying to do this trip on a shoestring...

My mates have booked this place http://www.campingloscoiattolo.it/home.php?l=en&act=0 but at €30+ per night we'll probably only be staying a few days beforre having to move somewhere cheaper...

Duncan, easy guess I guess?

My friends just messaged me and were encouraging about being in a van. Unfortunately in the process of copying it from Facebook I kinda deleted it instead. I have asked them to resend it and I will endeavour to post it here in the next couple of days. They mentioned that they found it easy and were not hassled. Even mentioned somewhere you can use to get a shower!!

Will reply soon. We are there from about the 29th July so should be well warmed up/ Brocken

They said that staying in van masino is ok by the old sports pitch and by the really old village built into the boulders on the other side of the road. If you cross the bridge at the centres de la montanga. Apparentley of you ask at the bar you can get showers for 3 euros and it is not too busy and the recommended area.

They did say val de mello itself was impossible to camp in for free as you need a campsite.
They also mentioned a road up to bagni where there is a campsite and good free areas to stay in their van.

For some reason I could not copy this from facebook so have had to rewrite it in my language!!

Great stuff - Not too bothered about being in Mello itself, just wanna be able to stick around for as long as possible before funds dry up...  :punk:

Definitely catch up out there..... Great!
