Major bouldering destinations worldwide
October 04, 2012, 11:43:42 am
I'm compiling a list of the major bouldering destinations.
This is what I have

- Font
- Albarracin
- Ticino
- Rocklands
- Castle Hill
- Hueco
- Bishop

Is there any glaring omissions? Does the Peak deserve to be on the list?

You hold the can and I'll scoop the worms out.

Grampians Australia?

Squamish, Canada?

Peak should probably be in.

Sydney?

For a completely vague leftfield suggestion. There is what I reckon to be an undeveloped boulder field in Bolivia which was boulders for as far as the eye could see. Quality I can't comment on but quantity was huge. Somewhere near the Salar de Uyuni / El Arbol de Piedra.

Why not just the grit in general? The peak and Yorkshire are easily both accessible in a day from each other.

Not all of the bouldering in the Peak is on grit.

Magic isn't actually in Ticino but is pretty close so would throw it in with it

Albarracin is nice, but major destination? Perhaps there is a lot of rock still to develop, but it seemed like quite a small area.

The peak is not well known as a bouldering spot outside of the UK - I surprised a lot of foreigners by showing them videos of grit bouldering. "That looks ok!"

This guide to Albarracin details 1600 problems. http://www.climb-europe.com/RockClimbingShop/Boulder-Albarracin-Guidebook.html.
Squamish is a good suggestion, http://www.quickdrawpublications.com/Squamish%20Bouldering.htm has 2500 problems in it.
Maybe Hampi should go in there. Is there a guidebook? I suppose the scope for problems is endless.

I think the Peak/Grit should be on the list.

Shit, you're right, imagine the fury of the climbers who travel from the other side of the world to climb on the grit and then realise when they get back home they could have had a pop on Dense's White Ladder.

Colorado is bigger than the UK! RMNP would probably be more of an "area".

There are a few different guides, all pretty rubbish. A new one is supposed to be coming out/out now that will be very good.
