Manchester beta
September 12, 2011, 11:41:11 pm
Twofold question really for Manc heads:

If anyone lives here; I'm getting conflicting messages from using a variety of public transport route planners and wondered whether the strongest method into Didsbury (Clyde Road) from the city centre is via a bus or via the train to East Didsbury train station? According to google route planner it would take me 34 minutes to walk 1.7 miles to work having stepped off the train. Obviously I think I could forward roll there quicker than that but I'm getting frustrated with trying to shave minutes wherever possible off a multi legged journey.

Secondly, as only in Manc Thursday and Friday each week, I'm wondering whether I might as well get a hostel room/occasional stay with homies and train at a wall on the thursday evening. If this was to be the case, to which wall would I be recommended to head to in order to pull down on a steep board for a few hours?

As an aside has anyone been to the CUBE gallery? I'd like to check it out one evening.

Many thanks.

Hey Mono,
Mrs T lives 2 roads over from there... I usually drive, but if getting into town then I get the bus there's loads heading up the Burton road in/out of town and I suspect (but not sure) there are a few up Palantine road too. It's prob a fair walk from the tram at didsbury - though in (god knows) 6 months or more when the tram opens in west didsbury that 'll be 5 mins walk away from you. If you have to get a cab it's £10-12 from picadilly.. Which is too steep for regular use..

No room at Mrs T's I'm afraid, but as the nights close in I'll be re-aquatinting myself with Manchesters finest plastic emporia.. So could well provide some wheels to and from the wall.. Thurs nights are good too..

Drop me a pm when you're set up..

I used to live on Lapwing Lane (top of Clyde Road) and the easiest way in and out of town was the bus. Easiest bus stop was the one on Palatine road just up from the cross roads. I'm afraid I can't remember the bus numbers. I've since moved the rarefied and more eco-friendly commune that is Chorlton-cum-Hardy so it's a mere hop on a tram to get to town now.

If you're staying on Clyde Road, you're very fortunate to be so close to The Great Kathmandu (Nepalese Curry House) and for a pint I'd recommend The Railway. The Met is full of a million Saltbeefs.

Oh, and the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon apparently has a fantastic new baker/cake maker.

I think from where you are the bus is probably the easiest way in and out of the city centre, at least until the tram is up and running.

Rock Over is my reccommendation for somewhere to pull on plastic. Lots to go at and the problems are changed relatively frequently.

edit Oh and +1 for Kathmandu

Many many thanks guys.

The bus consensus seems powerful so am looking that as the option now. Probably will leave Liverpool at 4am to make sure I can find it.
I'll be sure to check all recommended eating/drinking establishments and if any of you see a sadcase sat in the corner of them one thursday evening, please pop over for a pint :)

I will indeed thanks tomtom! Looking forward to experiencing a new place.

If I'm not mistaken Didsbury is just a few miles (if that) down the road from Marple. I usually head up to Rope Race to pull on some plastic. It's not huge in comparison to places like Awesome Walls but the quality of the routes I think are far better. The staff tend to be a bit friendlier and more knowledgeable and the bouldering area is sweet! Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Oh and the cafe there sells bacon butties and hot soup, nomnom.

If you are relying on public transport Rope Race is not particularly easy to get to. Nonetheless, it is generally a nice place to climb.

Public transport wise Rock Over is fine to get to and I guess MCC would be OK too. For Awesome I'd use the Tomtom taxi service as it might be a pain.

My preferences for wall are RockOver and Awesome Stockport.

If it's an option then by far the quickest way from town out to Clyde Rd would be to cycle. Failing that get the bus - the 143 goes down Palatine Rd.

For walls, if you can blag a lift then you're within striking distance of Rock Over, MCC, Stockport or the mighty Broughton. Without a car then Rock Over will probably be easiest to get to as it's walking distance from town, and if you're only interested in bouldering is arguably the best anyway.

Hope that helps. Luke.

Q1: bus- Princess Rd, Palatine Rd and especially Wilmslow Rd will have plenty.

Q2: Broughton, essentially Rubicon with a roof over it. Rockover is easier to walk to from Victoria.

Thanks champs!

Did a little reccy of Burton Road on wednesday and had a nice coffee early doors to get psyched. Well, as much as you can psyche up to use a Cad package.

The Railway looks sweet and am going to hit it up next week. As did the Great Kathmandu. Didsbury seems a very pleasant area! Thanks for all the shoutouts word.

Hi all,
Off to a conference in Manchester this week, prob got Tuesday evening free, thinking of trying to get in a bit of a climb.
Where would people recommend? Staying on Trafford Road near the Cricket ground so Rock Over or Broughton look good for location/price.  Which is easier to get to/better for a single evening.
Is Broughton still open/worth it if just for the history?
Any transport beta would also be welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

Ties evening prob best for either in terms of numbers and locals. Broughton you'll need a guide book for problems. Usually one abt at front desk or lying about. Rockover is worth going too if broughton is not your scene as its not the most first timer friendly when theres no1 to encourage you on sector 3

Hmm Broughton is cheaper and looks to be closer so that might swing it in addition to having visiting it before the seemingly continually impending closure.

depends what you want.
broughton is pretty hard work if you don't have a guide +/- someone psyched with you to try stuff. you aren't going to just go and have  a fun rumble round. and it'll be very cold.
prison bloc, has a pretty good set at present and is probably a lot easier in a "i might try that yellow v7' style.
if you're going for one session you'll probably get more out of prison bloc.

Plenty of guides in the plastic bucket next to fire doors on right side.

Just yo say I enjoyed Broughton a lot, although the walk there from Old Trafford, via Salford showed me that certain ares of Manchester still bear strong similarities to the Lowry exhibition I saw recently, both in terms of desolate industrial landscapes and people with haunted faces.  Thanks again to the person whose name I have forgotten who gave me a lift back, possibly saving my life.  Also thanks to the other people there who kindly helped explained the layout etc. and pointed out some of the problems/holds.

Thought the problems at the wall and wall in general was good, so many problems in the book it would certainly be a while before I got bored, though it would be nice if there wasn't the slight worry of falling between the mats to contend with!  Providing it remains open I will certainly be going back to it when next in Manchester, though I don't doubt the other walls are good, it offers a different experience and it is also nice to be at a wall where everyone there is obviously into climbing in a way that isn't always the case at other walls.
