Font–Paris on the train
January 05, 2012, 08:51:00 am
I need to catch a train next month from Font/Melun to Paris for the Eurostar. Is this easy enough? Can't really suss it out on the internet... Train to Gare du Lyon, then RER or Metro to Gare du Nord? How long does it take? Is it a pain?

Cheers.

I've not done it, but Dave didn't have any problems in March. Think its Metro to Gare du Nord.

It's very easy.  We got the all inclusive ticket- Font to Paris GdL, then you get unlimited usage of Water Bus/ Bus/ Metro.

The only probs I have had were trying to get pads on ultra busy metros at rush hour. Had to wait while about 4 came and went too full to squeeze us and a pad on. Can't remember any of the specific lines or anything..

We got the train from Bourron Marlotte into Paris and it was really easy. The line comes from further south and goes through Bourron, Font and Melun as well as various other villages along the way. The trains ran every hour and local tourist information offices have timetables. The only thing we couldn't do was buy a ticket at the station as the machine wouldn't accept our cards but I would imagine the larger station would have manned ticket offices.

Font certainly has manned offices.

Got the train in from Veneux-les-Sablons a couple of times and as GCW says the all-inclusive is best value for money.  Takes you in to Gare de Lyon (after passing through Fontainebleau).

Dated information here (but its a common commuting route so I doubt much will have changed, trains are fairly regular, some are faster than others).

Rock up at the station with 15-20minutes to spare and negotiate getting tickets there (thats what we did at Veneux anyway)..

Caught the train from Charles de Gaulle to font in October a few years ago.

For that particular journey it involved getting the metro into Paris from the airport and then as the above have indicated the Gare du Lyon which is essentially the major Paris train interchange.

The train cost something like 13 euro to go from Paris direct to Font, which passes through Melun.

From my experience the Gare du Lyon is pretty busy and a bit mad but I'm sure you can catch the metro from here to get the Eurostar. From the look of this map, the train from Melun (bottom right) runs along the green line to the Gare du Nord, which is where the Eurostar leaves from.

Hope this helps  :2thumbsup:

Well as I have been doing this trip Font area to Gare Du Nord for about 4 years now, think I had better give you the low down.
I used to go from Malesherbes as it was the most convinient but it takes forever, not too frequent and the last train GdN to Malesherbes is around 21:30 :-S
I now go from Melun direct line straight to GdN, very frequent indeed (some trains start in Melun), no changing required and at the moment the ticket one way is 6,16€ .
The reason I don't go from Font is that the trains are less frequent from Font and you have to change at Gare de Lyon.

Bois-le-Rois is the knowledge if you can get dropped off, rather than Font or Melun (el traffico). It is a small place so easy to get to and has a nice cafe just off the station and a manned ticket office. There might even be more regular/faster trains from there?

Anyway, it was what my mate who lives in Paris advised as he regularly travelled out by train before getting a car (you can get to Canon on a bike from there...)
